installing W10 shortly after clean instal of W8.1 (no drivers/updates)

    Hi,

in the past 4 years I've been running a laptop from msi with preinstalled win8.1 (its an msi GT72-2QD
with GTX 970M and i7-5700HQ, UEFI-BIOS). Today i decided to make a clean instal of Win8.1 using
an ISO from eightforums.com (TechBench by WZT):

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create | Page 34 | Windows 8 Help Forums

I started and finished the installation without an internet connection and i didnt instal any drivers or windows
updates yet/so far. But now im wondering if i now should make an update to win10 instead of setting
    up/configuring the current Win8.1 installation.

    My questions are:

*) Should i first install all available drivers and windows updates for this installation/machine and
then start the update process of Win10 ?

    OR

*) Is it OK to start the W10 update process now (without any windows updates and updated drivers) from
within Windows 8.1 by starting the setup.exe from the DVD containing W10 build 2004?

    thanks !

    greets from Germany !

During a clean install Windows will install default Microsoft drivers and some default non-Microsoft drivers.

To upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 you can use the upgrade assistant or perform a clean install.

It is not necessary to manually install / upgrade drivers.

One or more of these tutorials may be useful:

    ...thanks !

I already successfully upgraded two of my three laptops: both were running Win 7 Home. But in both cases
the installation was fully updated (windows updates) with latest drivers. I've been using tutorials and
tips/threads only i found here on tenforums.com. Both W10 installations are still running fine.

I'd like to perform an update to W10 on my msi GT72 first because it seems to be the easiest way to
avoid problems. On my 2nd and 3rd laptop i also perfomed an update to W10 first... ...and then i clean installed W10.

    ...but these are good news:
i can simply start the setup.exe from within my current/unfinished win8.1 installation on the GT72 and
start the update process ! .. nice !

    thx !

This is one method to clean install without upgrading:
Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First
Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

Another method is to manually enter the product ID from Windows 7 or 8.1.

just finished updating my (old) W8.1 installation to W10 Build 2004: everything went fine ! Been using old installation media containing build 2004 (from October 2020) only. Next step is to update the current W10 to build 20H2: the download and installation link to this update is already there in Windows Update.

The only problem is: i have some yellow exclamation marks in my device manager. I guess the automatic driver installaion in Windows Update is not active: currently im trying to solve this issue.

I would update to 20H2 then look for drivers.

Ya finding drivers for unknown devices on a laptop can be fun, but if the hardware came with the laptop, then you should find all your drivers at the manufacturers website.

The drivers for W8 should work for W10.

yes, i already updated the new W10 installation with all avaiable updates.
The problem is: there is (still) a long list of device drivers in "Optional Windows Updates".
And there is also an update available to Win 20H2 in this section.

I have no idea which driver is suitable for (compatible with) my machine... ..which one should i install or not.

I was looking for an automatic option which installs suitable drivers and in the meantime
i found a tutorial that explains that you'll need certain registry keys in the registry:

Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10
This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable including driver updates in Windows Update in Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Eduction edtions.
i guess this should solve my problems: i think/hope W10 will then automatically update/instal the suitable/compatible drivers for my system. Fortunately few months ago i also purchased a licence
of Win 10 Pro: now i hope i can simply upgrade to W10 Pro and windows will automatically install all compatible drivers.

But first i will update my current build 2004 to the latest version 20H2 and then update to W10 Pro.
I've already updated my second laptop from W10 home to W10 Pro few months ago.

All of the optional driver updates are compatible with your computer or they wouldn't be in the optional driver updates list.

^^...ahh... ...OK that sounds better !
I was quite confused: the list with optional drivers is quite long... ...and there are only few drivers missing in the device manager. Below are 3 screenshots showing missing devices im Hardware Manager and available driver downloads in Optional Updates (two parts). Thre is only one unknown device in Hardware Manager (last one).

You need to start with the chipset driver from MSI:
    MSI Global

    Specifically:
