Window 10 Upgrade Headache

Finally after deleting the downloads folder and editing the register, and another 12 hour download, Windows 10 finally downloaded.
Another 6 hours and it installed.
So far the only major problem is that port 80 is no longer available for localhost, so none of my 6 websites would work at locally. the map. Changing the port on my software from 80 to 8080 fixed that.
Other than that I have seen no improvement in speed or functionality, other than the fact that while you get the OS for free, it looks to me that you pay a lot more for everything else. I will reserve judgment at this stage.

    Hi,

I had the upgrade and it worked O.K. for sometime but now, it is crashing my computer so often that I am cursing Window 10 for all these calamities.

MS do not come to you help to solve the problem they have caused.

Its not worth the effort. My system takes 20 hours to download the files and stops with a different error every time.
So far its been at it for weeks, and I need to work.
I will stick with a good operating system until Microsoft gets its act together.

Upgrades have always been problematic, and Microsoft has *never* "come to you to help solve the problems". The only difference here is that far more people are performing their own ugrades than ever before. typically, in the past, upgrades were done by a professional for people, if they bother to upgrade. Most people just bought a new computer and got the new OS.

MS is pushing the upgrades to Win10 but for most people that is really not relevant. They would rather stay where they are.

Is there any possibility my video card is not compatible? This card is based on an AMD HD4670 GPU..
Here's how I got an old Radeon card to work in Windows 10. I can't lay claim to figuring this out. I found the info when Windows 10 first came out. I wish I remembered who provided it so I could give him credit.
Download AMD Catalyst 13.4 Legacy. http://support.amd.com/en-us/downloa...s%208%20-%2064
run the installer but close it after it unpacked all the installation files to C:\AMD.
    2: Open Device Manager.
3: Under Display adapters right click on the adapter used in your system and click Update Driver Software.
4: Click on the second option Browse my computer for driver software.
5: Click Let me pick from a list of device... in the next menu and Have Disk... on the following.
6: Click Browse on the pop-up menu and go to: C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_13.4_Legacy_Beta_Vista_Win7_Win8\Packages\Drivers\Display\W86A_INF.
7: Select the first .inf file - In my case this was: C7156445.inf - and click open.
8: Select the model from the list that corresponds to your hardware -
there were two of the same in my case so I just clicked the first - and click Next.
Afterwards the driver should install accompanied with several screen flickers. You may have to reboot.
    9. If all you want is the driver that's it. If you want to run CCC re-run the legacy driver installer from AMD and have it install the Catalyst Control Center.

Yes, I did sfc /scannow with no errors found.
I did NOT upgrade from 32 to 64 bit (ref post 9). The machine is question is 64-bit per my system spec. I successfully did a win10 upgrade on a 32 bit win7 machine as per my post #1. That worked out great but there weren’t many apps on that machine as there are on my specified i7-870 machine in question.
It seems that all of my problems could have been caused by permission/authentication issues from the feel of it. Lots of access denied errors when programs failed to launch and when I tried to copy files etc. I found suggestions that helped some people and had some success in getting icons back on my desktop but no useful progress for the effort. I kind of think if were a simple setting somewhere that MS would have patched it by now but can’t be sure, so…
I went ahead and made a win10 disk using the media creation tool and used it to do a clean install (‘keep nothing’ selected in menu) on the subject machine. It works fine but I haven’t loaded anything yet. Windows installed all drivers and all looks good in the device manager. I know I need to do the Catalyst install with the AMD driver but I was thinking of doing the same process as outlined in Post 15 but using Catalyst 13.9 which I was running on Win 7. Any reason to believe that process should not be applied using Catalyst 13.9? Without the catalyst I can’t scale my second monitor (small image now) so I need to get that done.
Also, is it a good idea to update the chipset drivers to intel drivers? How about the audio drivers? It’s an older 1st gen i7 processor but Intel might have win10 drivers for it, not sure right now. Presently, all the drivers were provided by MS and all looks good in the Device Manager.
Thanks for reading and for all of the suggestions.

I can't see why it wouldn't. The 13.4 version was the beta version that AMD quickly put out after Windows 10 was released to address some of the issues people were having with legacy hardware. After upgrading to 10 you could try going to the AMD support site and let their tool detect your graphics and OS and use whatever version they suggest using. It may very well point you to version 13.9. It also might keep you from using the workaround in post 15. If it doesn't work the way you want then you could always fall back to Plan B and use an older version of CCC and the driver. When using their tool I do not know if it will include a full blown CCC or not but it's worth checking.

I didn't know they had a tool. Sounds like a good idea though I have see on their site that they recommend using the very driver that Windows installs. In fact it seems that AMD wrote the driver that windows installs and provided it to MS as a 'courtesy'. Its not available on the AMD site, only via Windows update! Still though, it would be interesting to see what the tool comes back with as you suggest. I plan to try ver 13.9 per the process in post 15 when i get around to it. As you say, I could always fall back on ver 13.4.
Also, I thought ver 13.4 was the latest beta version for windows 8 on HD 4000 series graphics! Did you find that it included HD 4000 support on Windows 10??

Looks like your 13.9 will work. Take a gander at this post especially page 2 ATI Radeon HD 4200 driver for 64-bit Windows 10?

    Drivers?

Yes, I saw that! it's the only reference I've seen of someone using ver 13.9 which is why I was curious why 13.4 seems to the standard. Maybe just habit perhaps? I plan to use 13.9 and I'll let you know what happens. Since Ver 13.9 was made for Win7, I'll install in compatibility mode for 7.
Does anyone have any thoughts about other drivers (like the Intel P55 chip-set drivers for example) that were installed by Windows and provided by MS? Should these be updated if an Intel Driver is available? Windows installed drivers for everything and MS is listed as the provider in all cases except for the video driver we discussed. No yellow marks in the Device Manager so maybe I can just run as it is?
