Can I buy a Key for windows 7, install the ISO, then upgrade to 10?

I just got a new SSD for my laptop. And I need an OS for it. And I was wondering if I can get a USB stick. Download windows 7 ISO on it. Buy a serial key, then upgrade to windows 10? If I can do that can someone please give me a walkthrough on how? I really need my laptop to be usable soon. Thanks!

That brings up many questions, like: what OS was on the laptop before? Did the HD fail so that you couldn't clone the drive onto the new SSD, or do you simply lack the hardware to do that?

The simplest thing to do would be to buy a Win 10 license from the Microsoft Store, and install using that. There may be cheaper legitimate ways of acquiring 7, but I'm not familiar.

Why do you want to go on the detour with Win7 ??

When actually installing the Windows 10, when it asks for a product key click "I don't have a product key" or "skip" or "do this later". Once the installation is complete, then go to settings, updates and security, and activation screen. Then change product key and enter the Windows 7 product key to activate the installed Windows 10.

As stated, the version and edition of Windows 10 must be the version and edition that matches what the product key is for.

Home to Home. Pro to Pro. Ultimate to Pro. And both must be "regular" Windows, "N" Windows or Single Language Windows - no mixing them up.

Question: does the Win 7 key need to have been previously used to install and activate Win 7 on the same hardware?

I have the impression that is required, but no experience with it.

No it doesn't as long as its a legal windows key, and its not being used on the computer. Only allowed to use 1 key for 1 computer. New key, same deal......as long as its a legal key.

Depends on the product key and whether or not Microsoft has blocked it from automatic online activation. Currently automatic online activation is the only supported method of activating Windows 10 with a Windows 7/8/8.1 product key. If the product key is blocked from online activation due to repetitive use, then the user must install the Windows 7/8/8.1 on that computer, activate that over the phone, then they will be good to go to activate the Windows 10 on that same machine with the Windows 7/8/8.1 product key.

As long as the product key has not been blocked from online activation - and a new product key should not be - then there is no requirement to install Windows 7/8/8.1 first.
