Oh, I thought he was gonna go right into a clean install.
    Nevermind then. :)

Jessy, do what I said in post #72 . Then we know what you have rather than continuing to guess.

And yes, VMware Player allocates 60GB for a Windows virtual partition (20GB for a Linux virtual partition). But that is dynamic storage and is probably less than 20GB used right now.

I will. About to head home now.

I will be looking for the info. Once we have this data, it will be easy to reduce the disk usage.

One more thing Jesse, when you create a VM for windows, by default it makes up a 60 GB hard drive, I`m not sure if that stays in affect all the time.
Brian, I installed to a native Hyper-V VM, you can configure the size of the VHD (which can be static or dynamic). Win10 installed takes up less that 10 GB. The many times I've installed it was to 30GB VHDs.

I wonder how adventurous Jesse might be - maybe he could try Windows-to-Go on a 32 GB flash drive (only certain flash drives are recognized by Windows for Windows-to-go)

At the bottom of this link are MS certified flash drives (win8.1 / Win10 same certs):
    Windows To Go

a little more involved than just installing, but something to think about for the laptop.
Hint: use the Win8.1 system to create the flash drive.

Good idea Bill. But I think he has his hands full with the virtual approach. I like my stick systems. They are fun - especially the Linux versions because they are easy to make and give you many possibilities for playing around.

Thanks, I thought it was a good idea, and the author of the tutorial knows his stuff.

I don't want Jesse to get overloaded (easily done around here with so many voices ... so many choices). I thought it might be easier for Jesse than worrying about the Win7 laptop (backup, disk space, new drive) All good things, but the stick isolates the existing machine nicely without all the bother (some of the bother should be done).

If I think about it a different way - why bother with the laptop at all. Win10 is up and running on the Win8.1 machine.

I assume by "usage" you mean the amount of disk space that is being used. I suggest 2 things:

    1. run this program and post the resulting picture --> https://windirstat.info/

    2. Run the command below in an elevated command prompt and tell me what it says under "Allocated" and Maximum"

    vssadmin list shadowstorage
Not seeing a download link for that link you sent me WHS.
