    Cannot do a REFRESH of Windows 10


    Edited since original posting: I have since found that build 10586 was the W10 Insider Preview version, which continues to be updated in parallel with...
    build 10240, which is the RTM, or final retail version. Not sure how I ended up with the different versions as I backed off from the Insider Program, back to W7, long ago...

    Scenario: I have 2 computers, both say that they have all updates applied.

    Computer A gives the following information when I access System > About:
    Edition: Windows 10 Pro
    Version: 1511
    Build: 10586.63
    Product ID: finishes with AA569


    Computer B, for System > About:
    Edition: Windows 10 Pro
    No version or build info
    Product ID : finishes with AA812

    Using System Information tool yields slightly different results:
    Computer A:
    OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
    Version: 10.0.10586 Build 10586
    Computer B:
    OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
    Version: 10.0.10240 Build 10240

    It is not my primary problem (see below), but I cannot understand why the System > About, build number on Computer A is different to the version and build given by System Information.

    My actual problem is as follows. I have had recurring losses of internet connectivity since upgrading each of these two computers to W10. I found a link somewhere which helped to sort out Computer A. I had to download an iso file of W10Pro and then do a REFRESH, which kept all the apps and data intact. Nice.. it resolved my problem and sorted one or two I didn't realise that I had. So I thought to do the same to Computer B. However, Computer B refused to do a REFRESH, keeping apps and data intact, but would only offer a RESET, which would mean reinstalling all my apps. The reason given was as follows: You can't keep windows settings, personal files, and apps because you've chosen to install Windows 10 using a different language than you're currently using.

    Both machines were the free upgrades from Windows 7 Pro and both are configured as English(United Kingdom) with a United Kingdom keyboard. I have a legal .iso dvd of Windows 10 Pro which I am trying to do the REFRESH with. It works with one, but not with the other.

    Well, there you have it. Is there anyone available with that level of savvy who can actually suggest my way forward.

    Hi, I would imagine the problem is the build difference. The two PCs are at two different build levels; 10240 was the first public release, and 10586 the build released in November. Upgrading from 10240 to 10586 is virtually a reinstallation of Windows.

    Given that you only have the one DVD, that will be one of those specific builds.

    You can freely download Win 10 installation media, so you should download the appropriate one as needed.

    You may also like to be aware of this repair technique, which keeps most settings and also any desktop programs installed:

    Again, the same build of Windows as installed must be on the installation medium used.

    Please check 2 things. Run winver in both (press + R and type "winver" <enter>).

    Presumably one will say 10240 (which is the original Windows 10 release) and one will say 10586 (which is the November update).

    Then on both check the installed language. From a command prompt enter this

    Your problem is (probably) you are trying to use the wrong language. UK English (en-GB) is called "English International" when you download it not "English" which is en-US.

    Only the installed language is interesting and must be the same (well and the Windows 10 Pro being the same but you said it was).

    Windows doesn't care about the keyboard layout or time-zone or anything like that.

    When I think about it though, you don't need an ISO to do a reset or refresh anyway.

    Best you check you have the correct ISO (language is important) and do a repair install.

    Thanks for taking the time to offer some help. I got back here after solving the problem, which turned out to be stupidly simple to do (though I am not sure why...).

    I checked back on MSDN and found that since two days ago the download of the .iso file name had changed subtly, just in the number part of the file name - the first terminated in _7223712.iso and the new file _7223718.iso, so the same offering had been slightly changed. I downloaded that and went into the procedure for refreshing - I am sure you are right and there is some other way - which means mounting the .iso image as a virtual dvd (simply right-click and select mount) then clicking on setup. Unfortunately, I shall never know whether it was just the new file or what I did next. I then got to the point where it asks if you want to apply the latest updates now or later and this time I chose 'now', whereas last effort I chose 'later'. This time it went swimmingly and now the version and build on both machines are the same and my wifi problem (which was the primary reason to do this) has gone away.

    I am filling in what happened etc. so that, with your contribution, someone else coming across the same problem may find some wisdom here.

    Just one point to add. The .iso and my computer were actually different builds, perhaps that is why the update 'before' was needed and not the slightly different iso file.
