I really wanted to upgrade to the x64 version but the key would not work with that.
The same product key works for both 32-bit and 64-bit as long as the version of the Windows 7/8/8.1/10 are the same. You had the wrong version of 64-bit downloaded.

Yes, it is valid for either 32 or 64 bit, its up to you which architecture you want to use. Please note 1 key, 1 license. You can't install 32 bit one computer and install 64 bit on another computer using the same key.
Google "will product key work for both 32-bit and 64-bit windows 7" and you will receive many confirmations that the same product key will install the same version Windows 7/8/8.1/10 32-bit or 64-bit.

What I tried to do originally was to use the Windows 7 32 bit Upgrade key to clean install the 64 Bit Windows 10. Doing that I got a message about the key being an update version and not usable.

I then used the same Windows 7 Upgrade key to clean install a 32 bit version of Windows 10 which worked and activated fine. Once the Windows 10 install was activated, I then clean installed, without using a key, the 64 bit version which activated fine.

All the versions were Ultimate or Pro, only the bit version caused a problem. I should also note this install is Legacy and the system originally had Vista.

Well, glad you ended up with what you want! Now you shouldn't have any future problems until you decide to change the motherboard.

    Hi,

Now you shouldn't have any future problems until you decide to change the motherboard.
Whilst I haven't had a chance to verify this, in theory it shouldn't be a problem if you remove the old machine from your MS account prior to introducing the new one.

    Cheers,

You are (unfortunately) entirely correct. I used ShowKey - thanks - and the utility returned my original Vista Key. I upgraded from Vista a couple of years ago with the 7 Pro OEM disk and Seven worked fine until my attempt to upgrade to Ten (at the invitation of MSFT).

Do I need to reinstall Vista, upgrade again to Seven, and then upgrade to Ten or what? See the screen capture regarding the ShowKey message at "OEM Key" and the Ten setup error.

    Thanks.
    That key
    Windows Product Key: *****-*****-CM74G-RPHKF-PW487
is the default key that is installed when you install Windows without the key.

Your Amazon disk should of had a key sticker stuck to the box

Well.... I really feel stupid - or I prefer neglectful.

I looked at the packaging several times and numbers are written all over it - none of which are the product key. I was about to take a picture of my own of the plastic case to post here and saw the blank space that stipulated emphatically to tear off that sticker and place it on my computer. Being a good little boy I did as directed and that's why I didn't see a product key during my investigation. It was on my computer where I placed it several years ago.

I entered the product key and walla - Windows 10 now is activated.

Thanks for recognizing that sometimes simple things are overlooked in favor of assuming something drastic is needed.

That's OK, I can't count how many times I have put something in a specific place thinking, "I am going to put this right here so I know exactly where it's at"..... and then forget where I put it the next day.

Here's a little hint - make sure and keep a backup copy of that sticker - especially if it is on the bottom of a laptop where it will rub off over time.
