Let's run Windows 10 Final under old hardware Pentium 4 Socket 478

    hello there everyone !!!
This subject is opened only becouse of couriosity. There have been simillar one thread under other section:
Let's run Win10 on really really old hardware - Page 6 - Windows 10 Forums
But it looks dead for now. Moreover it was connected to Insider version of system which is useless now.
I want to bring newest Windows into my machine in work which got Windows 7 Pro license and MSI MS-7008 motherboard and Pentium 4 478 Socket.
I've found some info that Pentium 4 SL8JX with 478 Socket got EMT64 and NX Bit:
    http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL8JX.html
But it's very hard to find (and possibily even processor alone won't give possibility to run w10).
Also there exist NX Bypass for W8:
Windows 8 CPU Feature Patch (Bypass Windows 8 CPU feature checks))
which worked with Insider Edition of W10, now it doesn't. There is no possibility to open WIM file.
Any ideas ?? Maybe someone did it here ??

I'm interested on further posts on this thread... it's weird to see MS didn't pay enough attention to 2000's Pentium 4... they're really good !!!

i'm sorry to bring this old thread back but there are a few vendors that do still sell that old Pentium 4 SL8JX processor:

    Impact Computers & Electronics
    SL8jx - Intel - Pentium 4 Processor 2.80GHZ

    Star Micro Inc.
    Intel SL8JX - 2.80Ghz 533Mhz 1MB PGA478 Intel Pentium 4 511 CPU Processor

    CPU Medics
    Intel SL8JX - 2.80Ghz 533Mhz 1MB PGA478 Intel Pentium 4 511 CPU Processor

forget about the NX bypass "hack" for Win8 as that one only works with Win8.0/8.1 and does not work with Win10 versions from v1607 & onward. and there are no guarantees that the v1809 and future feature updates of Win10 will continue to run with the SL8JX cpu as these new builds may break or cripple support for these earlier P4s (just look what happened to the Intel Atom "Cloverview" or "Clover Trail" CPUs - they can't run Win10 v1703 or greater). using that Intel Pentium 4 SL8JX processor also requires a compatible BIOS update from the motherboard maker or PC manufacturer

See my old thread Windows 10 on 2004 PC?

You can run the Coreinfo utility to check what instructions your CPU supports https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/coreinfo

Your CPU needs to support Physical Address Extension (PAE), No-eXecute (NX), Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2) and the CMPXCHG16b (CX16) feature for 64 bit Windows.

32 bit Windows has less stringent requirements and that may install if the 64 bit installaton fails.

    Hi there
Latest version 1809 (W10 X-64 PRO) with updates applied
Runs fine on my old Sony VAIO Laptop with Pentium 4 inside -- not sure what the socket type is though.

Might have a check with the specs later. These old pentiums though consume a mega amount of power compared to modern CPU's !! My laptop gets quite warm when running things like photoshop for a while. I only use that machine for testing sometimes.

    Cheers

I was thinking to patch the Windows 8.1 system files (winload.exe etc) and then copy them to a USB Flash drive. Instead of trying to patch Windows 10 system files to install and run Windows 10, I would try to replace them with the respective patched files from the USB Flash drive. If Windows 10 can run with the Windows 8.1 system files, it might bypass compatibility check and run on Pentium 4. Anyone tried that?

As for x64, WinXP did have a 64-bit Pro version, still have a copy of it, also have a usable WinXP Home computer.

The problem with Windows XP x64 is finding drivers. It's more likely a device to have Vista 64-bit drivers than XP x64 drivers. Also the maximum Windows version you can install on a legacy Pentium 4 3.00 Prescott socket 478 (32-bit) without hacking is Windows 7 SP1 32-bit. If you patch certain system files you can force install Windows 8.0 and 8.1 32-bit. Here we discuss the possibility to use these Windows 8.1 patched files to install Windows 10 32-bit. I am thinking to create a virtual machine, disable PAE/NX to simulate Pentium 4 and test that possibility. I will report my results and post a guide if I succeed.

Is it an issue with only a compatibility check during setup, or is it an issue with Windows 10 booting after it is installed? If it is just a compatibility check during setup, you can just manually apply the Windows 10 image from install.esd or install.win using DISM with no hacking of files involved.

The compatibility check is done in every boot, both when running setup and when loading Windows 10. So the patch must modify the system files permanently, until some major update replaces them.
