Agreed.
Agreed.
The fact that this discussion has run for several pages, on a geek forum, should be evidence that there is an issue (e.g. confusion).
Even worse is the likelihood that if W10 sells like the W8 series, that will accelerate the release of a "Cloud OS".
Well there you go, compared to those options is Microsoft really so bad? I know my previous comment is going to tick some people off but they have the right to set their terms of use. Just like your bank or your ISP or any other company that provides a service. If you don't like the terms don't use the product.
This turned out to be quite the thread, Wolfgang. You sure got people riled up with that title.
I've been extremely busy with remodeling a house. Sneaking this post in on a midnight snack. All kidding aside, there have been some important and interesting points made.
Looking through Shawn's tutorial on clean install using the custom choice (Step 7): https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...n-install.html
In step 17 > What would happen if one simply presses "Next" on that screen without filling anything in (seen below)? Turning everything off in the 3 previous screens? I simply haven't got the time to experiment with it.

Hi there.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "Advanced productivity programs" ?? - apart from the fact that about 90 % of the worlds servers are running on some time of Linux - and people on these very forums say they can do all sort of work on Android tablets (android is only another variant of Linux).
Many research people in universities regularly use Linux in their research work too.
If you mean "Classical type" desktop workplace applications then I suppose Linux does need a decent office suite and some sort of CAD type program but many automated warehouses and other functions often use large swathes of "embedded Linux" in some of the machinery while interfacing say with a system like SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management - especially with Material Flow Management (MFM) for totally automated warehouses.
The GIMP is an excellent imaging program which for most people covers around 80% of what Photoshop does and its FREE. For OFFICE you can use WPS Office for Linux which is free and far better than IMO Libreoffice and is pretty compatible with Ms Office.
Linux runs VMWARE / VBOX and also has TWO virtualisation Hypervisors available - KVM and XEN so no problems at all in running virtual machines of any OS you want and WINE can (although not always but its getting better all the time) run Windows executables directly without the need to install the OS either as a REAL or VIRTUAL macine.
Multi-media support is better than windows - things like VLC have been around for ages while media servers such as PLEX are available.
Linux due to its nature can be made to run almost anything (and usually does). For a lot of people tinkering around isn't what they want and Windows supplies an excellent system highly useable and stable enough especially for work places where dealing with a single supplier for fixes, updates etc is wanted - the problem essentially with Linux is the myriad of zillions of different distros which can make it confusing for the user to operate it as a desktop.
In the professional server market however there's only TWO major players - SUSE / NOVELL and REDHAT.
For OFFICE on Linux have a look at this FREE ONE (doesn't have ACCESS but IMO ACCESS is an abomination of a database system anyway) - the "EXCEL CLONE" works pretty well and you'd have no problems with the "Power Point and Word" clones.
Office Suite for Linux - WPS Office
I'm not sure if it supports VB Macros - however for many people the compatibility will be more than enough.
(I'm not saying we should all switch to Linux - least of all on a Windows Forum - but don't underestimate it especially these days where some distros are even more "Windows like" than Windows itself. !!!!!)
@Hippsie Gypsie -- it will open up an Ms account sign in page - the simplest way to avoid that is to temporarily disconnect Internet - pull out Lan cable / switch off Wifi and then hit back button. Then you get prompted for a LOCAL account. Fill in user name then re-connect Internet and continue -- Job done.
If the Internet isn't connected at all during install then you won't see the Microsoft account page.

Hi there
On Windows I believe the latest PRO version does support VBA macros or at least reasonably.
If you don't need those then download the FREE 2013 version - this will save the latest Ms office formats (DOCX etc). This support seems to have been removed from the FREE 2014 version for non Chinese users. !!!
On the latest Linux version I can get some pretty good graphing facilities too -- looks like unless you are a real MEGA POWER USER on EXCEL it's streets ahead of anything else purporting to be an Ms office clone. I onlt heard about it on a trip to Shanghai - it doesn't seem to be highly publicized in the West yet.
Little tip
If you want to use a 30 day version - use it in a VM - but backup the VM before installing. Then for another 30 days restore the VM and re-install. !!!
Cheers
