Yes this is what most of us do, this gives you some insurance IF something goes wrong. Always a good idea to make image backups. I make mine about every 2 weeks, or 3. Just for insurance. Then as time goes on I delete the older ones.
Just a small note thou. I never use Windows Backup, can cause problems sometimes, when you actually need to restore an image.
Lots of folks use different 3rd party apps. Like Acronis, or the Macrium Reflect Free version. Of course you can use whatever you feel comfortable with.
I use Macrium Reflect Free version . Excellent program and easy to use.

I have another question : I have a partition that contains old movies I no longer want to keep. Is it better to delete all of them or reformat that partition ? If reformat I normally use Mini Tool Partition Wizard for this type of operation

You can do either one, formatting might be better choice for your hard drive thou. Glad to see you using 2 excellent programs, I also use the same ones myself.

Same thing happened to me. Installed Windows 10 as an upgrade. My CPUID was gone. Shortcut was still on the desktop, but program was gone. Looked in windows.old and found it, copied it and re-instated the shortcut....works fine!

    Hi,

Yes, those two little programs are pretty much OS independent, they don't need they're executables in a specific folder to run.
This is why they still run fine from Windows.Old folder. You could say they're kind of semi-portable apps.

    Cheers,

I was very surprised that it ran from windows.old as well. But I will just delete the shortcut and reinstall.
Many programs will run from windows.old. It depends if they are portable or not. E.g. rufus is portable and could be run off a flash drive. Microsoft Word is not, requiring registry changes, dependencies on other parts of Windows etc.

Many small utility programs are portable which is why Kyhi can include them in his excellent Winpe Recovery Drive in the software and applications section.
