Have you tried booting to the 640 GB drive?

No, that's my data drive and all I keep on it is "My Documents"

How do you know, unless you try. The boot files only need an Active partition, not some special one.

    Does it do anything useful?

What functions does the System Reserved partition actually perform?

As near as I can tell its only functions are:
    • Waste a Primary partition slot
    • Cause weird boot problems

I've set my PC up without one:
    1. Pre-partition HDD
    2. Install XP
    3. Install W7
    4. Install LM17

Well, I've about had it with fooling around with this. I re installed 9879 to my spare drive after first disconnecting my 8.1 drive. This time I left the drive "unallocated" and left it up to 9879 to do whatever with it. After installation it showed up with the boot sector within the 9879 drive. I shut it down and switched the Bios to my 8.1 SSD drive and it booted and when running Disk Management showed that 8.1 had a boot sector and now the 9879 drive didn't! ARRRRGGHHH. So I ran Easy BCD and added the spare drive with 9879 on it to the boot menu. Upon rebooting I got the Duel Boot Screen to choose with my choice of either system. Now I can boot whichever system I want. My 8.1 is on the SSD and the 9879 is on the spare drive which now has the boot menu on it. Not exactly the way I wanted it but it'll have to do for now until W10 comes out and then I'll get rid of 8.1 Thanks to all for your help.
