    Upgrade to windows 10 home

I am helping a friend update an older laptop that has windows 7 home 64bit on it.
When the update starts and it checks to see if everything is acceptable will it stop the process if there is any
programs that are not acceptable? He feels that there is one on this machine that would not work on 8.1 which
    is his main machine.

If you know what it is, you can uninstall it, just in case, and reinstall it after the upgrade. You may even post a screenshot of Programs and Features so we can see the installed programs and tell you if anything is not compatible. Also Windows Setup will display a message to uninstall any application that won't work in Windows 10. After doing so, restart Windows Setup and this time should continue.

If the issue is just the compatibility of installed programs, I don't think it will stop the installation process.
Win 10 will just render those programs inoperable.

I said that because long ago when installing Windows Technical Preview build, Avast was not compatible at the time. After Preview was installed, Avast just stopped working and its desktop shortcut had turned into a white icon.

I had Microsoft Virtual PC application installed which is not compatible with Windows 8 and 10. When I attempted to upgrade to Windows 10 I got a message that I should uninstall it first and then restart Setup. I did, restarted and upgrade completed without any issue. And as billy268 said, some programs didn't work and required to reinstall them. After reinstalling them, they all worked OK. So don't fear, go ahead.
