Trying unsuccessfully to upgrade to Windows 10

Hi- I have been trying unsuccessfully to upgrade my Win 8.1 desktop to Win 10 despite all the help on your excellent tutorials. The PC was originally Win 8 and has SSD for drive C: When I originally set it up I moved the user folders to HDD Drive I: using the Sysprep as described in eight forums and then updated to Win 8.1. I also have another HDD drive J: for video recordings etc.

I've been running Win 10 on my laptop since start of Insider program and have also installed to two other laptops OK, but have not been successful with my desktop.

I have tried updating to Win 10 first via Windows update which failed with "Modern Setup Host has stopped working" error. I also tried the Media Creation Tool as an upgrade on this machine, and with the ISO burnt to DVD as an upgrade and it failed at 25% in each case with the same Modern Setup Host error. Other people seem to have had this issue but there does need seem to be any good solutions on the forums.

I then tried using the ISO DVD with the Install Windows and Keep Datafiles option which also failed at the same 25% point with the same message. Given that is seems maybe migrating my data is causing the problem I was about to try the Install Windows only and keep nothing option, but got nervous about losing all my data and media files as I was not sure if Delete all data also deleted data on the two HDD's in addition to Drive C and my User Folders on Drive I. I am now making copies of all my data just to be doubly safe.

It looks like a Clean Install is my next option to try to make the upgrade, but I am not able to get the DVD I burnt from the ISO to act as boot media. I have several questions:

    1. Do I need to make the BIOS changes to the UEFI Bios to enable the DVD to act as boot media?
    2. With a clean install does it matter that my User Folders are currently moved to Drive I, as I assume I just follow the instruction in the forum to relocate the folders after installation?
    3. Is it best to unplug both my HDD's and just do the install at first onto Drive C to avoid any risk of deleting data that is on the two HDD's?
    4. I have many files on my OneDrive with local copies on the OneDrive located on Drive I: - will doing the clean install mean that these files would be by OneDrive viewed as having been deleted, and then get deleted on my other laptops also accessing the same OneDrive?

I would really appreciate some advice on best way to proceed to avoid making a bad mistake here. Once I have confirmation of best route to go I am comfortable following the tutorials.

    1) I had to enable booting from the DVD drive and put it ahead in the boot order in the BIOS.
    2) No.
    3) That's what I did because I was paranoid about losing data.
    4) Unknown. But you could makes copies on your One Drive to have a backup of the original files if they were deleted from One Drive.

Before the next attempt, try doing the following (in no particular order after the backup is complete):

Create an image backup of your existing operating system to an external USB hard drive using a program like Macrium Reflect Free. If you don't have an external drive, get one as they are relatively cheap. A 1TB drive runs $50 to $60. Create the Rescue Disc that allows you to restore a backup is the computer will not boot normally, before you create the image backup so if anything goes wrong, you can recover in 20 to 30 minutes.

Check for updated drivers for your hardware at the manufacturers web site.
Disconnect everything except mouse, keyboard and display, EVERYTHING!
Uninstall your anti-virus if it's other than the built-in Defender.
Uninstall your firewall if it's other than the built-in Firewall.
Uninstall any Start button programs like Classic Shell, Start8, also Window Blinds, etc.
    Uninstall any theme modifications.
If you moved any of your user folders to another drive or partition, move them back.
See here: Successful upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1 with 'Users' in other drive!

If you upgraded from Windows 8 or 8.1 and used EaseUS Partition Manager to change the partition structure, see EightForums for instructions on how to get your recovery partitions sorted, because the upgrade won't work otherwise.

Run chkdsk /r and let it start and complete on reboot.
Run sfc /scannow and see if it finds and repairs any system files.

Now try the upgrade to Windows 10.

Note: The above is a compilation of things people have done to get the Windows 10 upgrade to work for them. Seems like a lot of work but worth it if it allows you to do the upgrade.

Thanks for the help so far. Many of these things I have already done - update drives, remove Kaspersky, uninstall Classic Shell etc, but I will run through the whole sequence.

I did use Paragon Partition Manager to repartition the first HDD, but not the SSD which came installed on the PC when I bought it. Running DISKPART.EXE and REAGENTC /INFO I see this - does Partition 1 have the incorrect type? If so how do I correct it?

I have now managed to get the DVD to boot the PC -- there were two entries for the DVD drive in the Boot sequence - one with UEFI and one without. Moving the UEFI one to the front solve the problem.

OK - after making disk images of everything using Acronis I just tried an update from the ISO DVD having done:
    1. Uninstall Kaspersky anti virus and firewall
    2. Uninstall Classic Shell
    3. Relocate User directories to C: as per guide here https://www.tenforums.com/installatio...her-drive.html
    4. Ran chkdsk and sfc (with errors as above still remaining)
    5. Returned desktop theme to standard
    6. Removed all extra USB connections apart from wireless mouse / keyboard

Update still failed at same point 25% on first section with same Modern Setup Host error.

I think this narrows it down to either the Partition Structure or the errors found in sfc / scannow.

I managed to fix the sfc errors using DISM, but the upgrade still failed at the same place, so I went for a clean install, and successfully activated the copy of windows. I then tried to relocate user folders to Drive E: and this has completely messed things up with Start and most of the Modern Apps not working. I've posting that problem here https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...s-10-a-23.html
