W 8.1 To W 10.....still possible ?
One of my nephews brought me two fairly old laptops yesterday.....one is a Toshiba Satellite, with a W7 sticker on it......imagine my delight when it turns out to be running W10......now updated and with a good battery......the OTHER one is a Samsung, in really good condition, but I can't get into it as it is password protected, I know that there is a way around it but have forgotten how....the thing is it's running W 8.1......is it worth pursuing ??.....

Getting around the BIOS password is difficult on a Notebook/Laptop. On a Desktop motherboard one can pull the CMOS battery out to discharge the User-available data including the passwords [yeah, there's 2 possible in the BIOS, one for making changes in the BIOS and the other to let the boot process continue then the Operating System password is last] and/or there's a pair of pins that can be jumpered to clear it. It's usually more difficult on a Notebook/Laptop as some disassembly is required such as removing bottom cover, with older ones it may be near the memory or drive location. There's also a possibility there is a reset button on the machine somewhere but would need the manual for it to find out.

Thanks for that......I have done it before, but can't for the life of me remember how......my main concern is that if there is now no free upgrade from W 8.1 to W 10, then it is not worth doing.......

I did a Dell Inspiron on March 29, 2024 from activated Win8.1 to Win10 and it activated okay, just did the latest updates on it yesterday.

It was possible back then but don't know if it still is, no surprise if it's not now. Some of the older computers work good with versions of Linux, I Linux Mint on one and works good, just doesn't do 5G Wireless [2G okay] or Bluetooth.

Is it a password in BIOS, or a windows password?

It's asking for a Microsoft password......my nephew gave me what he "thought" was the password......but it won't let me in.......

Enable the built-in Administrator account, use Option Two here:
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable in Windows 8 | Windows 8 Help Forums
Sign is as Administrator, make yourself a new local account, then make it an administrator. Use this local account to sign in and sort out the PC, you can now disable the built-in Administrator account.
