My Acer aspire laptop had this error and I Uninstalled tuneup utilities 2014 and W10 installed, reinstalled after upgrade and updated tuneup program with latest update and working fine,,, Installed on my home built desktop with tuneup utilities running with no issues at all. "go figure".

After years of dealing with this error I have finally figured out the issue. I had the same exact error when trying to upgrade from 8 to 8.1 and eventually gave up, assuming 10 would solve it. Nope....30018 error again! Finally I decided to get desperate and start pulling things out of my desktop. I unplugged the cd drives, USB ports, sd card readers, and nothing. Error again. I pulled the Nvidia GTX 570 card and swapped it with an old 9800GT. Voila! Finally moved past 32% and the screen flashed once, which leads me to believe it's been a video card driver issue from the very beginning. I registered to share this with you in hopes to spare someone all the pain and aggravation that I went through. Good luck upgrading!

hope this may help some folks... a MS support tech had me do this for my desktop.

setup msconfig for a clean boot (google it).
disabled antivirus.
shut down computer. Unplugged ALL USB cords, mobo USB device, Ethernet, external drives... ALL but the mouse, keyboard, and video card cables.
booted into windows 7 and clicked on the setup file on the USB drive that I previously setup with my options... Win 7 Pro, x64 architecture, English, upgrade all files and apps.
took less than an hour... on win 10 boot enabled the services from clean boot. Note that startup is not in msconfig in Win10... it's in Task Mgr, BUT the 10 or so apps that ran in Win7 were gone for Win 10!
Shut down and reconnected everything... only one monitor came up, but I checked the driver for the NVidia video card and updated it from Device Mgr. Fixed that. I used Stardock Fences and that cause the icons to be crazy, so there was an update for that on their website.
Still have a couple of things that ran from startup that may not run in Win10. I'd recommend writing down all startup apps in your old system for reference. The software for my WD backup won't run at startup but the app works.

My Win8.1 laptop upgraded without blinking so i was familiar with the new OS. I'm sure there will be some things I find that won't work right, but a couple of things I ran the compatibility check on runs fine.
after doing all this, it wasn't really so bad... prob less total time than TRYING to upgrade 6 times and failing.

I installed from a memory stick, removed it at first computer restart and it succeeded.

I Got mine to work! THIS IS WORTH READING:

To test, I fresh installed win 8.1, then directly tried to upgrade to 10.
Only things plugged in were my keyboard and mouse 2x gtx 780, sata HD, sata dvd drive
Install failed and I got the errors we are getting.

I took out my graphics cards and the sata DVD drive and put in an older 560 gpu and tried to upgrade again IT WORKED.

I hope this helps anyone thats having problems.

We upgraded a HP 15 - AMD A6 notebook from win 8.1 to Win 10.
First we encountered our error at 30% completion:
0xC1900101- 0x30018
The installation failedduring FIRST_BOOT with an error during the operation SYSPREP

After running checkdisk, sfc, disable and uninstall AV, etc. We got a little further at 40%.
After fourth tries, we run a Disk Hardware Diagnostic - it failed the DST test!

We cloned the Seagate hard drive with a brand new drive.
Win 10 upgrade was completed without error!

This worked perfect after 6th time of trying I disabled defender, made sure not to save any files or apps or setting, and on the first reboot I was able to get past the 39% As of now I am at 55 percent. Also when doing the upgrade I also choose not to download any drivers. I am on a Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet.

I'm getting the same error message, I've used to have windows 10 installed. I remember I had to update a driver before the upgrade in Windows 8.1 would work.

A clean install doesn't work either. I'm getting stuck at 30-32 %



In desperate need of some real good help here I've trown everything I could try at it.

This post was incredibly helpful. After several fails -- uninstall avast, removing peripherals, USB boot, the advice above worked. I am running a modified Acer TC 780A w/ a Samsung SSD primary. The following worked:
1. Updated the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168 and Intenl Wireless Bluetooth drivers through the Intel Driver and Support Assistant Installer
2. Uninstalled Avast
3. Unplugged HDMI for dual monitor - leaving VGA; speakers/speaker USB power; had already unplugged external harddrive, and headset
4. Used msconfig to clean boot Windows 10
5. Disconnected Ethernet cable
6. Ran setup from the USB drive I had created using Windows Media Creation Tool
7. Declined option to update prior to Windows 10 Creator install

It installed in ~20-30 minutes.
