Upgrading windows 7 home premium to windows 10 pro a possibility?

Pop wants me to upgrade his laptop. Like the title says. Currently running Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there a way to go to Win 10 pro from here or is a clean install needed?

Yeah sure, just buy a license, you can either upgrade or preferably clean install.

I made the installer media with a USB drive, and it just says that it will upgrade to windows 10 Home. How do I specify Pro?

Win10 will install whichever edition the Product Key for Win7 is, Home to Home or Pro to Pro. I've used a Pro key to Upgrade Win10 Home to Win10 Pro, reinstall wasn't necessary as it simply activated features for Pro and downloaded appropriate updates so it will depend upon acquiring the key. There may be an issue with an upgrade as some support for doing it has been ended, last I did was early March.

    1. Mount the USB drive.
    2. Open Notepad, and create a new file named "\sources\EI.cfg" on the USB.
    Code:
    [Channel]
    Retail

    [VL]
    0

    3. Boot the USB, and select any of the Windows editions. Obviously you will need a valid W10/11 Pro license key to activate a Pro installation, since Home is a different product.

garlin's suggestion is the best solution
I just wanted to post this:
    [EditionID][Channel]
    Retail
    [VL]
    0
    safe as ei.cfg

    copy to the sources folder

    Boot into Win 7.
Insert the Win 10 usb installation drive created with MCT and run Setup.exe.
It will end with Win 10 home. It wont be activated.
Go to activation (settings) and select change key. Enter a Win 10 pro key.
It will restart, load some updates and it will end with win 10 pro and activated.

OK. I can do the sources thing. However, is it going to allow me to retain everything or do I need to back up first?
