How to transfer Windows 10 license to different PC and MS account

    Hi Everyone,

I need to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 and I think I may be able to do it via an unused Win 10 gaming PC that is around the house. It belonged to another member of the family.

I have reset the unused PC and done little else with it.
I have gathered the following details:
    • Windows 10 Home product key
    • MS account user-id and password
    • confirmation that the license is a digital license
    • It is: Installed from 'Full Packaged Product' media

Most of the advice I see in online searches is for people swapping their own Win 10 license to a different PC. I have seen some advice online that may be relevant e.g. my kind of transfer is not just a matter of installing and entering the Win 10 product key.

Does anyone have advice or know of links to steps for this kind of a transfer?

    Thank you

Sorry but I did not get the Windows 10 Home version number.

Hi, you'll perhaps be aware that MS discontinued the free upgrade from Win 7 a few weeks back.

You will find it an advantage to link the Win 10 activation with your MS account on the Win 10 PC.
Link Microsoft Account to Windows 10 Digital License

If you then succeed in upgrading your Win 7 PC to Win 10 (not all attempts are successful) then creating an account with the same MS credentials should make activation easier.

    If not try
Use Activation Troubleshooter in Windows 10

You're welcome- plenty of experience in dealing with this amongst members here.

However note that with MS's change of rules, if the PC whose Win 10 license you want to use acquired that by upgrade from Win 7/8.1 then transferring is unlikely to be successful now. But it sounds like that's not the case here.

If you are giving away or disposing of your system, it is important that you unlink Windows 10 license from Microsoft account. Here’s how.

    Why is that important?

    Hi All!

I have just discovered what might be a show-stopper for this intended upgrade from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 Home. In Windows 10 upgrade paths this table seems to say that in such an upgrade data is preserved but applications are not.

    Have I got that right?
I do not want to have to re-install applications after this upgrade.
I may have to go ahead and buy a license if that is the case.
Unless... Would it be possible to do an edition upgrade on the Windows 10 Home PC to Professional before I do the upgrade?

Hi, as I said before, there is no longer a free upgrade path from Win 7. MS blocked that. Please see the relevant News item in the News section for more.
