The upgrade tutorial is in the searchable Tutorials section if needed.

Thanks, Dalchina and Bree, for your attention.

I will have to delay this process since I can't interrupt the work PC for a while.

Please, let me know if there is a link to the normal upgrade steps to follow when I get some free space and time to resume.
It no longer gets a free digital licence, but these are the steps to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

I think you already have the link for downgrading 10 Pro to 10 Home.

    Thanks, Bree.

I will keep this bookmarked for when I have the time (and courage!) to go ahead and try it out.

I must say, I'm still a bit confused to be able to upgrade to Win 10 Pro using a license to Win 10 Home. Does it mean that after upgrade to Pro it cannot be activated unless it's downgraded to Home?

You're not upgrading to Win 10 Pro from Win 7 with any hope of it being activated.

As explained above... that's the first step.

As explained above.. Once you have Win 10 Pro (unactivated, as I said) the next step is to downgrade to Home. At which point you should be able to apply your unused or possbly transferred Home license.

Going down an edition requires a small registry change followed by what is called a "repair install" of the lower edition.

It is the same two steps whether you are going down an edition in win7, or going down an edition in win 10.

Going up an edition is a quicker process.

    Just a concluding note.

I was hesitant to do the more complex thing of trying to upgrade Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Home.
So I bought a Win 10 Pro product key (quite cheap) and will eventually try it out on the main PC.

    Thanks for all advice,
    Nick

You might also want to know that windows 10 has 1 year support left. Not sure if you are aware. You already bought the key i guess so might aw well use it.

Thanks Malneb -- I am quite backward at keeping up to date so yes, I guess I'll go with this license and see how it turns out.

Windows 10 and 11 use the exact same product keys.
