Here is a laptop I rescued. It was originally purchased in 2006.

    Original:
    Toshiba Tecra M7-S7331
CPU: Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83GHz)
    RAM: 1024MB DDR2
O/S: Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 (Vista Ready)

    Current:
    Toshiba Tecra M7-S7331
CPU: Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83GHz)
    RAM: 4096MB DDR2
    O/S: Windows 7 Pro > Windows 10 Pro

Like your laptop it is rather sluggish. However, you can speed up the desktop somewhat by doing the following:

    Settings > System > About
Select Advanced system settings under Related settings

    For System Properties dialog:
    Select Advanced tab
    Select Settings under Performance

    For Performance Options dialog:
    Select Adjust for best performance
    Select OK

When I got the computer the original 100GB SATA HDD had failed. I replaced it with a 250GB SATA HDD that I had salvaged from another laptop. If I get around to it I might replace that with a 256GB SATA SSD. Hopefully, that will speed it up a little because it is painfully slow.

No hurry right now because I have two other laptops to keep me busy. Also, I have a Raspberry Pi 5 coming in a week or two that will keep me occupied.

Downloaded Ubuntu and gave it a go off the usb stick. Actually a noticeably bit quicker than Ubuntu or Windows 10. Not on par with current 64 bit stuff but close to usable. I also found a LInux distro Porteus which says it's designed for speed. Will give it a try in the next day or two.
It's not that I really need the 32 bit 1.6 Ghz Acer, but it would be nice to make it a usable little box.

You could try putting 4gb instead of 2. Depending on the cpu it might be able to utilize 3gb of the 4gb which could make a difference.

Looking through the versions of Linux available shows the Recommended RAM is 4GB and the CPU at 2.0Ghz, I've had Voyager and Feron running on 3GB and 2.16GHz on the Live USB drive, just got Lubuntu on USB and will be trying it and Ubuntu Budgie.

Zorin OS Lite (free) only needs 1Gb RAM and can sideload Windows Apps.

It won't help the OP because it's 64bit only.

    Update:
Based on one suggestion, I downloaded Lubuntu and ran it from a usb memory stick. I may have already stated that it was a bit faster than Ubuntu and a lot faster than Windows 10.

While wandering around the internet, I found some information on a 32 bit linux distro called Porteus. It big claim was very low requirements for RAM. With only 2 Gb on the old Acer, that sounded good.

It took a while to find a 32 bit version (Porteus-CINNAMON-v4.0-i586.iso) but I found it and downloaded. Once installed on a usb stick, I gave it a try. Once it launched and settled, I found the menu item to hook up to wifi. With that done, I downloaded Firefox to have a common browser for evaluation.

I found that the browser response time was remarkably better than any other option I had tried. Google loaded quick and completed searches on par with a newer 64 bit Windows system. I must say that at this point I am impressed.

Now I just need to figure out how to install it in a dual-boot situation so I can quickly compare it to my windows 10 installation.

Cinnamon is one of the most resource-heavy Linux front ends. I couldn't find Porteus MATE (lighter) but I did find Porteus XFCE 32-bit (lightest).

    Hope this helps...
