I have 2 laptops, not clean installed since I got them almost 8 and 6 years ago... lots of programs installed, a good few startups- and no noticeable change in speed.
How do you manage to keep your laptops/PC running OK? I appreciate I do little/no maintenance so, over time they do seem to slow down. My laptop was dreadful

Yes, I do look in Task Manager. My laptop seems to spend a long time re Disk activity and the 'window' shows 100%. It does settle down after a while. Obviously, while this disc activity is going on, the device is slower.

Suggest you start a new thread with an appropriate title about 1 of your PCs, with 1 or more screenshot of your task manager taken about 3 mins after logging in (which should allow any startups to load). Don't launch additional programs except to create the screenshot.

Ensure your build number and hardware specs are available, plus as above, free space on C: and page file settings.

One thing a few find happen with HDDs is that the disk transfer rate becomes very limited e.g. to 10 MB/s (can check readily by simply copying a large file back to the disk and using task manager, performance.

I don't do a great deal to be honest- I run an old version of ccleaner set to delete files in certain places and clean up when creating my next differential image. That just frees up space, clears the recycle bins, deletes wer, tmp, temp, some log files and certain folders I find a few 3rd party programs fill with unwanted files.

Wiztree is very good at showing how space is used.

Using disk imaging (Macrium Reflect) means the integrity of my file system is checked regularly too.

    Julie,
I run Disk cleanup [aka CleanMgr & Clean disk] every most months.

It's a few days since I ran Ccleaner and updated my disk image set: here's Disk Cleanup vs my settings on Ccleaner:

    - not much rubbish! Ccleaner covers more areas, including some 3rd party programs.
Many dislike Ccleaner- later versions especially- I only use it for cleanup with selected cookies protected (it does that last well).

Here's Wiztree- I set the colours to show files I'd want to delete in red/yellow/orange (etl/tmp,dmp...). Not much apparent- which is good.

I wonder what the comparison would be like if the same settings were used in both [e.g. emptying the recycle bin]?
I'm not a CCleaner user but I understand from others that it would still remove more than the built-in Disk cleanup [CleanMgr].
I don't know if that would translate into greater improved performance or not.

You're right of course, it's not a fair comparison, nor is it meant to be- just indicative - for interest. (I doubt I've ever run Disk Cleanup more than a couple of times!)

The point really is the outcome- however that is achieved- a matter of personal preference. And for checking that, Wiztree is a great tool.

At one point I found certain locations not touched by Disk Cleanup contained quite large unwanted files... some relating to a 3rd party program I no longer use- hence Ccleaner proved useful. There will be other tools of course- but the whitelist for cookies remains attractive- needed e.g. for some banking sites.

The main difference between Disk Cleanup and CCleaner is that Disk Cleanup only clean Windows stuff and CCleaner also clean other applications like Firefox, Chrome, Skype etc.
Only Firefox accumulate more than 200M on cache every week
