    Help required installing Windows 10

    Hi!

Hope someone can talk me through this!!

I've got a Samsung Netbook with Windows XP that I would like to upgrade.

It's only got USB ports so I've bought a Windows 10 on a stick.

The only thing that's on it is an ISO

Can anyone talk me through how to replace XP with this Windows 10?

    It's a 32bit version.

I do have access to a PC with Windows 10 installed.

Hoping someone can help - thanks

Hi, some very basic issues there:

    a. Why did you buy some version of Win 10 on a flash drive? You can freely create a bootable drive to install Win 10 any time you like.

    b. Do you know if it came from a reputable source? Does it claim to provide a valid license?

    c. I'm going to guess what's on that drive is 64 bits. You seem to have some old 32 bit Samsung Netbook (model not specified).

It will not have 64 bit drivers available. Attempting to install 64 bit Windows on that is likely to fail - lack of drivers.

    d. Attempting to install Win 10 on an old, unsupported device is entirely at your own risk.

    e. a 64 bit installation takes more space than a 32 bit version. Space may be limited on your device.

    f. However some programs nowadays do not run on a 32 bit O/S.

    Etc...

All that aside- if you were to try to install Win 10 on a device running XP- it would be a clean install - where you delete everything on the PC as part of the installation - around steps 13/14 of this procedure:
    Clean Install Windows 10

What are to specs of the pc an old xp may crawl. To install insert usb stick reboot and set it to boot usb when it shows disk delete all partition and it should be plain sailing. Its worth doing a disk image of xp so if it doesnt work you can roll back to xp. You realy need at least 4 gig ram more the better it will run on 2 gig like a snail but it will work

It seems that someone sold you a USB drive with a Win 10 iso file on it. As Dalchina mentioned, you can download the Win 10 iso for free. What you have to buy is a Win 10 license key to activate win 10 after installation.

As it is an old computer, probably with little amount of memory, I suggest you install a 32 bit light Linux version.

How will that work if the USB flash drive only has an ISO file on it? Or maybe I am reading the OP too literally.

Let's summarize the assistance offered to you already:

    1) If you provide us the details of your system (make and model number would be good), this would help us to do some research into the feasability of running Win 10 on this system. Since a PC can come with varoius configurations, if you know details such as the size of the disk drive and amount of RAM, this would be helpful. Since you running a 32-bit OS you likely have 4GB of RAM or less, but it would be good to know for sure what we are dealing with.

    2) As ISO image by itself is not entirely helpful. It could be used to make a bootable thumb drive, but you can do that for free by simply going here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Select the option to create Windows 10 installation media.

If you do not have another thumb dive for this task, you could backup the ISO image on the drive you received and we can turn that thumb drive into a bootable disk. If you want to go that route, let us know what size this drive is.

    3) As noted, this would be a clean install. Since we don't know how well this will work yet, it would be HIGHLY ADVISABLE to make a complete disk image backup of the PC as it is now so that you can revert back to the current state should you need to do so.

    4) Be aware of some limitations: For example, we are unlikely to find Windows 10 specific drivers for a system of that vintage. On the more positive side, for really old machines I often find that all the critical bits, the drivers built into Windows will often suffice, but any special features may not work. This is another reason to perform a backup first - because it's hard to know in advance what we will end up with.
