The laptop is also running slower than normal so... another reason to wipe and start again.

RE: Reset Windows Update - TenForumsTutorials

It doesn't mention that it should be run in Safe Mode.

Anyway here's what I always use (in Safe Mode right click run as admin)

    ResetWUEng.zip

Good point. I will give it a try before using the nuclear option

So... after more fruitless hours at her place trying to get the laptop to get Windows Updates. I said ok I'm going to reinstall Windows 10 at my home, then give it back to her, not really looking forward to this.. but . Another 50 Mile round trip

    Summary of fixes tried:-
    Windows Update Troubleshooter
Reset Windows Update on TenForums Tutorial
Change laptop DNS settings to Google
ResetWUEng.zip in safe mode (Tried most of the relevant fixes but not all!)
In-place Upgrade to latest image from MS (Had to download this at my place then take it over to hers!!)

Drive back home to my place, turn it on, log laptop into my router and it starts Windows Update, downloading all the missing updates since March!
The only conclusion I can draw is the Vodafone router she is using has/is blacklisting some sites? Including Microsoft Windows Updates.

I also use Vodafone as my broadband provider, but I don't use the supplied Vodafone router, I use my own (Fritz!Box 7590)
My Dad uses Vodafone in the same area where she lives, no problem.

This really is just a shot in the dark but do you happen to know if she had ever changed her router admin password away from the default set in it when it was delivered?
If not then it might well have been compromised [but I would have expected her to have told you about her computer being infiltrated by malware since that would have been the purpose of compromising the router].
And this should only apply if her router was, say, pre-2019 because Vodafone were early adopters of compulsory changes to on-receipt router admin passwords.

    All the best,

Hi Denis, She did contact Vodafone a few months ago about the telephone signal had gone dead, then about some problems with the router, which they fixed remotely!!
Miss tinfoil hat has changed both the Admin password from the default and renamed the WiFi broadcast channels and Wifi passwords as well!

On Tuesday when I went over, I should have checked the other laptop she owns for any Windows updating issues.

Vodafone routers are @@@@, I should have kept her previous ISP Zyxel Modem Router and setup Vodafone on that!

You know that if you use WUreset zip then it requires a reboot and preferably a router reset. Then wait around 5 - 10 minutes after booting into Windows, Reconfigure windows update options, then initiate a manual check. That usually does the trick.

If you didn't reboot, wait a while then reconfigure update settings then it would explain why it only started working again via your router. I bet it now works with hers. If it doesn't then hard reset the router.

Went over today and I asked her to try the other laptop she owns, does windows update work on that? Then reboot the router and try again.
    Hopefully it's all fixed now
