    "No OS found" message in BIOS...Pls help


    Hello,

    I have windows 10 installed on a SSD in my desktop PC, I want to use the same SSD on to a laptop, I removed the SSD and installed on the new laptop and booted, I'm getting the error "No Operating System found in the disk"...

    Earlier I have done the same from another desktop pc and the laptop recognizes the windows installation and was bootable but now its not bootable with this SSD...What could be the possible issue and how do i acheive this? I dont want to reinstall windows newly, just want to use the same windows installation and only install drivers for the laptop,..Can someone help?

    desktop: MSI board (UEFI )
    Laptop : Dell xps L502x (old LEGACY motherboard)

    Edit: the MSI board shows uefi harddisk in bios whereas the dell laptop is old legacy only...Could that be the issue? If so how do I get this to work? any workaround?

    Joseph,

    Yes, that's the problem.
    There are utilities to convert the disk from MBR to GPT to allow it to boot in Uefi but I know nothing about them.

    convert disk from gpt >mbr can be done by various 3rd party programs.

    best to make a backup image first in case you make a mistake.

    You can use the desktop to convert the drive from UEFI - GPT to Legacy - MBR.
    The SSD drive that is going to be converted can't be the main drive on the desktop.

    - Install the SSD drive and boot from another drive.
    - As already suggested, better do a SSD drive image and save on another drive.
    - Download DiskGenius (free) .
    - Convert the drive from GPT to MBR.
    Take note of the Windows partition letter on the SSD. It won't be C:
    - Open a CMD window as administrator and type:

    diskpart
    select volume X (replace X with the Windows partition letter on the SSD. It won't be C:)
    active
    exit
    bcdboot X:\Windows /s X: /f BIOS (replace X with the Windows partition letter on the SSD. It won't be C:)
