Looking to download WIN 10 1803 but I cannot get a MCT to build an .is

I am working on a project. It downloads windows 10 and 11 versions and is a wrapper for the MediaCreationTool (MCT). I am merely updating something that is already out there, but not up to date. I am just using this as a learning experience since I have never dealt with writing batch and powershell scripts.

The problem is that everything I try, the links are dead and strangely even though I have a valid products.xml, I can't get MCT to work without it quitting and telling me to download the newest MCT. I know 1803 was a sort of disaster, but I'd like to cover every version for posterity sake.

Anyone with a Microsoft link to a MCT that will install WIN 10 1803 with my valid products.cab/xml I would be very grateful if you could share the address with me. Personally, I think this is something Microsoft is doing as I have tried every MCT version available.

Strangely some of the MCT's I have downloaded appear to work without the script - but I am not sure anymore. A whole day down the drain looking for answers.

    Thanks in advance!

    Windows version 10 an 11.

The MediaCreationTool wrapper works by downloading direct from Microsoft the specific Product.cab (containing the products.xml) and the mediacreationtool.exe appropriate to the version you wish to make. It then runs the MCT in SelfHost mode.

Each version of Windows 10 had its own specific MCT which can only create the install media for the version it was written for. It appears that the MediaCreationTool1803.exe is no longer available on Microsoft download servers, though the newer (and older) ones still appear to be.

The MCT has evolved over time...

Up to and including the 1607 MCT the products details were hard-coded into the MCT. Any MCT from the original 10240 pair (one for x86, another for x64), through 1511 and 1607 will still, to this day, build the ISO for their respective versions.

Then with 1703 it seems that Products.xml was introduced. For the 1703, 1709 and 1803 MCTs they will check, then tell you they aren't the latest version and you should download a newer one.

Yeah, M$$ has done some strange stuff with the 1803 MCT.

All records of the 1803 MCT have been removed from Microsoft and if you find the 1803 MCT, it just says it is out of date and to use a newer version of the MCT. The closest thing I could get to work was an MCT for 22H2 from 09/2022.

I am aware of the Products.cab that contains the Products.xml file as they are what I have been working on sorting out with an 1803 MCT. It looks like support for install an actual 1803 build have ben removed by Microsoft. Part of my purpose here was to allow for posterities sake an archive of available builds from the earliest ones using the MCT to today's Windows 11 22H2.

It would seem that is not going to be possible with 1803. Maybe I can find a build that is in the 1803 range to replace it, but I am doubtful. Many thanks for your assistance although with all of the testing I have been doing, I pretty much figured on it being a lost cause when I posted.

Yeah, lol busted! It is the MediaCrationTool.bat script. I spent likely two hours learning and fixing/updating the script with no prior knowledge of it and basically 3 days scratching my head about 1803.

His license said it was OK to modify, but I will keep it to myself unless he wants the update public. It truly is a nice script that he put a lot of time into for work-arounds. It now does everything but 1803 and you can't update directly to Windows 11 from some of the earlier Windows 10 versions, but I was surprised how many would skip versions and go right to Windows 11 22H2.

    Lol.

I suggest forgetting about 1803 for your own sanity. Been tortured enough.

Fido is a PowerShell tool for downloading complete ISO images, written by pbatard (Rufus).
It creates a web session to generate official download links, and goes back to W10 1507 (and W7 SP1, 8.1U3).

I've just tested Fido that @garlin suggested and it can download an ISO for 1803. Another possibility is the Heidoc tool.

Thanks @garlin and @Bree! I forgot all about Fido! Well the challenge is back on there has to be a way to do it using the same system the MCT uses, I just know there should be, but yes, you both are right - both tools do what seems the impossible with the MCT...

Thanks again, I will apprise you of my findings.

They do the job in different ways. Both tools download existing ISOs from MS servers, the MCT downloads the component parts to construct an ISO. It is some (or all?) of these components for 1803 that have gone missing.

Yes, I ran across a post from @AveYo here -> Cant download Windows 10 1803.,about aveyo/mediacreationtool.bat - Coder Social dated March 4, 2023 that reinforced the notion the 1803 MCT has been erased from the planet. He said he was planning on replacing it with 1809 - (which I already have in the tool script.) Since I cannot find an MCT that was for the 1803 version, I can't make the wrapper work for that version. Running:

    Code:
    strings.exe SetupMgr.dll | findstr /i fwlink
On all tools even those claiming to be for 1803 and even the latest version of it yield me the same result - referral to the 22H2 Win 10 tool that does not work with the appropriate .esd file. Interestingly, the .esd files are still on Microsoft's servers, it is just the MCT that they destroyed.

The spirit of this other than to learn was to simply update the tool, not change entirely how it works for one version that is from 2018. The good news is that @AveYo indicated he was going to update the tool, so my main objective - to learn, was met. I just won't need his update.
