    Ver,

And, to be frank, I think that a Clean install will take less time than continued investigation.
Clean Install - TenForumsTutorials and, in preparation for one, consider Backup and Restore Device Drivers - TenForumsTutorials
But do make sure you really have backed up all his user files and make a system image before starting.

    All the best,

I have re-read all the posts on this thread and noticed that we didn't do the basic.
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

Back to Windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    sfc /scannow

If it finds any corrupted files, fixing or not, reboot and run again

    Then run
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    and
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

(FWIW chkdsk passed in post #2)

I also rather think you will find the above does not help typically with the error message received.. but worth covering the basics of course.

Thanks Dalchina. It's the last thing I can think about. It's trivial but sometimes it works.
Personal y, I think the installation is wrong from the beginning and a clean install is the right thing to do.

Quick question and update - I'm still here.

First off I did follow the link from dalchina on page 2 and read through it very thouroughly. I tried what was suggested on page 4 of the MS link:
"Here is the solution. If anyone else has this issue where 20h2 won't install and you look in the setuperr log and don't really see anything that jumps out at you here is what you should try.
Open a command prompt and run
    bcdedit /enum all
find the GUID for the "resumeobject" under the "Windows Boot Manager" and copy that GUID.
    then run
    bcdedit /delete (paste GUID here)"

It did not work for me either. So I have been moving files around and I think I made two backups from two different softwares. I made one and then Denis said to make sure I have his user files backed up... so I found a tutorial on backing up user profiles, but it seems to me like I just made a second full backup because it took so long and file was so large.

I am now following Brink's tutorial on how to do a clean install... and step 6 of creating bootable USB says this:
Windows refuses to update past 1703-capture.png
Why why why why do I not want what is recommended?

Suggest you ask that question under that tutorial.. (no link to it provided).

Because Option 1, Step 7 takes you through making your own choices.
If you are making the installation USB on the computer it will be used on then you can leave that checkbox set.
If you are making the installation USB on a computer that is the same language & architecture [x86/x64] as the computer it will be used on then you can leave that checkbox set.

Most drive image software allow to mount the image so you can open the image on Explorer and then copy any file or folder to the new installation. Witch software are you using?

Please follow the instructions on post #33 to do a clean install. It is that simple.

To create a Win 10 USB installation drive, let MCT create it for you. (don't use Rufus or any other app)
Remember to boot the Win 10 installation drive as UEFI to install as UEFI-GPT.
Also don't forget to run Showkeyplus to extract all keys used on the current instalattion.

The drives are unplugged now but I think I used Aeomi and EaseUS. I followed recommended links from this forum.

I did make my USB from the MS site. Thank you 😊

I'm going to mark this as solved - even though technically the problem didn't get solved and I had to do a clean install - something I was trying to avoid. However, at least there are a wide range of troubleshooting techniques and their outcome in this thread.

I will say I am very appreciative for the knowledgeable help I received. It has been enjoyable tinkering with and understanding this pc better.

I too think something wasn't set up properly from the get go. Perhaps this pc was always in a state of confusion - the Minitool Partition Wizard showed the BIOS was setup as Legacy, yet it clearly seemed to be UEFI?

I'm now onto figuring out how to add drivers and other things back from the software backups.

And then to tackle my next problem. Saturday night, while I was trying to get this pc to update, my son's pc did an automatic update to Windows 11. His pc is now nearly unusable. The beats it takes while waiting for it to get up to speed are insane. His download speed is now at 15 vs 500. Ping and upload fine, and other pcs fine. I don't know if this is an update or networking question?
