    External SATA SSD

Hi, I want a real quick way to frequently swap an SSD. Can I extend/route an internal SATA cable to go outside the case and just connect my SSD drives there? If I do …. Can I power it with separate 5v supply from a caddy or must I use the power from the internal PSU?

What would be the maximum useable length for the SATA cable?

    Thanks

You can buy sata disk connectors that allow swapping the drives in them. You have the block wired in permanently within your desktop and just slot your desired disk in to its front panel.
It's much neater than fiddling about running wires outside your casing.
There was a question in the forum about this only a few weeks ago.

If you search Amazon for something like hot swap hard drives it might take you to some examples of them.

I've found an example. It's a UK firm but its details might help you get started with Amazon searching.
    CRS Aluminium SAS/SATA Hot-Swap Tray, 1 x 5.25" to 1 x 3.5" - NovaTech
or, for a USB external one,
    StarTech.com Dual Bay SATA HDD Docking Station for 2 x 2.5 / 3.5" SATA SSD / HDD - USB 3.0 - SATA Hard Drive Docking Station - Hot Swappable Bays - 2 x HDD Supported - NovaTech

    Best of luck,

There are no major speed differences between SATA and USB 5G (USB 3.0, Gen. 1). Just use a SATA-USB 3.0 adapter.

Yeah I thought this of the speed but I never been able to boot from a sata to usb3 caddy. It would be my preferred solution. How would I reference it in easyBCD so I can add it to my boot list? Cheers

    Okay guys…thanks for your help
I don’t know why I had issues bottling from usb before (win10) but I just tried you suggestion with sata to usb converter and added the drive to easybcd and it booted perfectly.

Happy days! Cheers for you advice guys!

    I'm glad it's been resolved.

    Thanks for the rep,

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
