Upgrade to Windows 11

There are, indeed, other ways. Rufus is not essential; I've never had to use it.

Naturally, you'd make a new system image before starting so you have something to fall back on if it all gets horrendous.

You can run an In-place upgrade procedure [aka Repair install procedure] in which you've jobbed the contents extracted from the ISO file:
1 Download the ISO as usual Download Windows 11 ISO file - ElevenForumTutorials
2 Extract its contents [to a USB stick or to a local folder, it does not make any difference].
3 Replace the .....\Sources\appraiserres.dll file with an empty copy of it [just create a new text file, leave it empty, rename it to appraiserres.dll, copy it into position thus overwriting the original].
4 Run the In-place upgrade procedure [aka Repair install procedure] as usual - [Do note that this does not involved booting from a USB or anything else. Your applications & documents are not effected].
I did exactly this only six days ago.

There are lots of ElevenForum discussions of this subject.
If you refer to any of them then do check that they are stated as applying to the latest Version 22H2 because 21H2 was less strict.

There are many other ways.

One of the simplest is to download the Windows 11 ISO and perform an in-place upgrade. As NTN says, make sure you get an ISO in the correct language to match that of the installed W10.

Important: disconnect from the internet before starting the in-place upgrade. When it fails and says your PC is incompatible you then replace the appraiserres.dll in C:\Windows.~BT\sources with a zero sized dummy file.

Just right-click and create a New Text Document on your desktop. Rename it as appraiserres.dll, then delete the original and cut and paste your replacement from the desktop into the folder.

It is important to choose NOT to let Setup check for updates during the upgrade. If you do then you won't have the 'Back' button to go back and try again after the initial failure.



When you get to the screen above replace appraiserres.dll, then click Back, then the Next button to try again.

I found this simpler than waiting for a failure to occur and only then fiddling with it.

I would tried to update first to W10 22H2, and then after to W11.......just to be safe.

It may will be some files missing else.

If you first upgrade to W10 22H2 then you will take a backup there before continuing to W11.
So will you also be able to go back to a full functioning and updated W10.

Remember that in W11 you have to upgrade your self with an ISO when there is some new builds, you do got defender updates directly.

But now I have a dilemma: Update to 22H2 first by using KB5015684 (Enablement Package to upgrade to 22H2), or go straight to upgrade to Windows 11 ?

It doesn't make any difference as Win 11 will replace Win 10, 21h2 or 22h2.

Things can go wrong so, as already mentioned, do a drive image before you start. Better be safe than sorry.
