What will happen if I install more than the Max Memory in a W-10 PC?

My PC is now an HP Compaq Elite 8300 AiO i5-3470 3.20 GHz with Max Memory of 16GB RAM (2X8GB Sticks).
Realizing the Max Memory is 16GB, if I installed (2X16GB Sticks), would it function like normal, ignoring the excess?

I'd expect so- my only question would be whether you'd still gain the marginal benefit of dual channel operation, assuming your MOBO supports that.

It either will only see the max supported memory or it will not work at all............or it will accept the extra memory.

Sometimes a BIOS-update could make the motherboard accepting more memory than the specs. Especially when the processor already does.

In fact, my ThinkPad E460, is in that situation. The officially specs says max 16GB memory.....but because of BIOS updates it is now able to swallow 32GB if the processor also accepting that. In my E460 I have i5-6200U.

    RAM Upgrades | ThinkPad E460 E-Series - max up to 32GB
Check this site for your PC...

    For your PC:
    RAM Upgrades | Compaq 8300 All-in-One (AiO) Elite-Series - max up to 16GB

For your PC it is also limited with the slots.....if you put a 16GB into one slot it will not work at all I'm afraid.

I came across this on the Intel CPU Site and it confused me.

    i5-3470 3.20 GHz

    Memory Specifications
    • Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 32 GB
    • Memory Types DDR3 1333/1600
    • Max # of Memory Channels 2
    • Max Memory Bandwidth 25.6 GB/s
    • ECC Memory Supported ‡ No

My new /used System has the i5-3470 CPU installed.
The HP specs for my 8300 AIO state the max memory is 16GB's.
If I thought, there was a reasonable chance it would use 32 GB's, I'd upgrade it to 32 vs 16.
    Currently it has 4GB's installed.

Here is info on the memory that is currently installed.

    SODIMMs
The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to two industry-standard
SODIMMs. These memory sockets are populated with at least one preinstalled SODIMM. To achieve
the maximum memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 16 GB of memory.

    DDR3-SDRAM SODIMMs
For proper system operation, the SODIMMs must be:
    ● industry-standard 204-pin
    ● unbuffered non-ECC PC3-10600 DDR3-1600 MHz-compliant
    ● 1.5 volt DDR3-SDRAM SODIMMs
    Removing and Installing Memory 21
    The DDR3-SDRAM SODIMMs must also:
    ● support CAS latency 11 DDR3 1600 MHz (11-11-11 timing)
    ● contain the mandatory Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) specification
    In addition, the computer supports:
    ● 1-Gbit, 2-Gbit, and 4-Gbit non-ECC memory technologies
    ● single-sided and double-sided SODIMMS

    DDR3 1333/1600are installed now.
In theory, it should take 32 GB's.

Any feedback / guesses regarding this potential upgrade would be appreciated.

    I'm just repeating:
"For your PC it is also limited with the slots.....if you put a 16GB into one slot it will not work at all I'm afraid."

Your Motherboard have limited it to max 8GB pr.slot.

If you take your processor and put into another Motherboard with 4 slots it will work with 32GB.

    Look at the link.

If you don't trust the link, well then you go and have extra memory and give it a try....you probably know best.

Get Speccy, install it, run it... take a screenshot and post it here.
    It will look like this...

The important thing here, is that it will tell us what motherboard you have.

    OK, I will.

I ordered the memory and it will be here in about a week.

    I'll update the post then.

Please post a screenshot of Speccy. According to the specs I just looked up for your comp... the memory is not gonna work.

On a side note: The Intel HD 4000 graphics in IN your CPU, not ON your motherboard.
    Intel Core i7-3770 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor (BX80637I73770) - PCPartPicker

Scroll down on the left side till you see: Integrated Graphics

The Intel HD 4000 is what's known as an IGP (Integrated graphics processor).
It's built right into the CPU.

Modern Intel CPUs like the Intel Core i9 13900K, are up to the Intel UHD Graphics 770 IGP.

Memory is tied to the IMC inside the CPU so what ever your CPU can support generally is what you can use up to in terms of Memory capacity, if you have the slots for the amount of ram capacity up to the IMC's maximum, there is more to it but this is a general rule of thumb.

The limiting factor i can see here in your situation is that the following elite 8300 form factors CMT, MT, SFF have provision for 4 ram slots so you can get the full 32gb.

The UDST form factor of the elite 8300 only has 2 ram slots and with DDR3 only coming in 8gb sticks then this is why it says a max of 16gb.

Seeing as you are saying that you have a max 16gb for the motherboard then its safe to assume you have the UDST model.

DDR3 only comes in 8gb sticks or less. There is DDR3 ram sticks that are 16gb but they are rare and at the time of this machines creation they didn't exist. This machine came out in 2013 and the ram in 2015. Regardless its rare i have lots of DDR3 ram like lots and i have never owned a 16gb stick.

I'M Intelligent Memory to release 16GB Unregistered DDR3 Modules

You can try but as already mentioned its either going to work or its not. It will either step down to 16gb, work as the full 32gb or not work at all.
