Ok, my ASUS 10" tablet does not have a slot for SSD (but it will look funny if it does) so I installed VMware-player-6.0.3-1895310 on the attached micro-SD card (a Samsung Evo 64GB). Everything is sweet in just one go. But do I really need to install those tools that keep popping up?

Just point it to that ISO, it won't recognize the OS so just press next,

I'm sure you can figure out the rest though.
Thank you for the great post. I will give it a shot.

Thanks as well. Lots to learn. Never dealt with VM or even iso files before.

Yes, it enables a bunch of features and makes the OS run better. Install them if you can.

The tools were installed, more for sharing the folder on the host than for improving the display...

When using VMware do I need to burn the ISO to a disk first ?

No, you can just point it to the ISO, see the first picture posted by derekimo.

There is also a guide here if it helps - VMware Player - Install Windows 8
It's aimed at Windows 8 but it's the same for Windows 10

It's fine, doesn't matter how many pictures there are sometimes, it's easy to miss things here and there.

Is that the laptop in your specs Bob?

You can go into the BIOS and check that Virtualization is enabled, but looking at this thread,

IdeaPad Z710: virtualization support broken - Lenovo Community

    Doesn't look promising.

You could try the 32bit instead, since I don't think you need VT enabled for that.
