Extremely confused about Windows 10 ISO images (UUP dump not working?)

    Extremely confused about Windows 10 ISO images (UUP dump not working?)


    I'm very confused about how to get correct ISO's, even for the latest version of Windows 10 (19044.2075).

    I tried to do it the official way. I downloaded Mircosoft's Media Creation tool and created an ISO (English x64).

    I mounted the ISO it created and checked it in PowerShell via dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:G:\sources\boot.wim /index:1

    So, what it created is a Windows 10 2004 October 2021 ISO (19041.1288).

    I verified this by checking the packages on this ISO by converting install.esd to install.wim, mounting install.wim via dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:E:\Win10\install.wim /index:1 /MountDir:E:\Win10\Mount /ReadOnly, then running dism /Image:E:\Win10\Mount /Get-Packages:

    I have no idea why Microsoft's Media Creation tool only downloads Windows 10 2004 19041.1288, but that's all I can get it to do.


    I found this archive, which appears to be "official" ISO's (they seem to be official, but I'm not 100% certain of what they are exactly, or how they were created):

    Of main note is the "ServicePack Build : 1645", which appears to have all files in install.wim on the ISO already patched up to 19044.1645. Again, if I check this by extracting install.wim and running dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:E:\Win10\install.wim /index:1 /MountDir:E:\Win10\Mount /ReadOnly, I get:

    So indeed, this is a good ISO image of 19044.1645. Everything in intall.wim is patched up.


    I tried UUP dump, but, this appears to be even worse.

    After running the downloaded cmd file, then mounting the resulting ISO image and running dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:G:\sources\boot.wim /index:1 on it, it looks like this (in the below example, for 19044.2075):

    That's extremely disconcerting. Why is this? What is this? Where are the 19044.2075 files?

    I don't undserstand how UUP dump is supposed to work, or what the use case is. Is it for new installs only, where it then patches it up automatically or something from 19041.264 to 19044.2075 during initial installation? Or does it do something else?

    It doesn't look like I can upgrade an earlier Windows 10 installation with one of these UUP dump ISO's. (Or can I?)


    To further illustrate what I'm talking about, here's the UUP dump ISO for 19041.867. The size of the ISO created is 4,797,632,512 bytes.

    Here's a link to archived ISO images for 19041.867 from workers.dev. The ISO size for the "Consumer" x64 ISO is 5,600,618,496 bytes.

    I chose 19041.867 for this example because this is the last build of Windows 10 that includes Edge Legacy.

    Here's the folder contents for 1\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe for the UUP dump ISO:




    And here's the same folder contents of the "official" archived ISO (consumer x64 ISO):




    Again, that's very disconcerting.

    I'm grateful to anyone who can explain to me what exactly this UUP dump image is. Because based on the above, I really don't see any reason to use them over ISO's from https://isofiles.bd581e55.workers.dev. And since I can't even get Microsoft's Media Creation tool to download anything other than 19041.1288, then I have no idea what I'm going to do if I lose the above resource.

    19041/19042/19043/19044 all share a common set of system files, the only difference is that an enablement package is included to turn on the dormant 19044 features.

    As such the ISO for all of them will report itself as a base build of 19041. An ISO you have just made with the MCT will have and install the 19044 enablement package, so you do have the correct ISO after all.

    Thanks... that clears up the Microsoft Media Creation tool confusion... but IMHO, it's still pretty confusing. Even though it says 19041 everywhere, it's still version 19044? Very strange.

    As to UUP-dump, this was user error.

    I missed this:





    I am working on two systems / one monitor; and one of them is Windows Server 2008 R2, which uses the Windows 7 kernel. That's what I was using to run the UUP dump scripts. This does actually build the ISO's, but does it the same way it would on Mac and Linux; no integrated updates.

    To apply the updates to the ISO, it needs the Windows 10 version of DISM, as stated above.

    Had I read more thoroughly and not missed this, I could have saved hours of time and confusion.

    IMHO, there really should be some message built into the script that warns the user, something like, "WARNING: AddUpdates is set to 1, but this script is not being run on Windows 10. Windows 10 is required for update integration. Base ISO only will be built."
