Can data drive be physically moved to new build?

    Hello All,
I'm getting ready to build or buy a new computer. Right now the OS and programs are on an SSD and 3 users' data is on a 6tb mechanical hard drive that's a little more than half full. I want to use that same data drive in the new computer. Can I do it without having to copy and restore all the data?

Sure you can put drive in new pc, but bear in mind, you need to back all data any way in case drive fails.

Assuming the HDD uses SATA, the new computer needs an SATA connector and should have it.

As long as there is a SATA port to plug it into - the answer is yes.

As a second drive, Yes. I've done it and I don't get tangled up in the GPT versus MBR, it doesn't have to be bootable, same for External USB drives.

How will the new windows installation know there are preexisting users and connect to their data on the transplanted drive?

I presume 6TB drive is already gpt, or else op could not see more than 2TB if mbr.

It won't if you have moved personal folders like picture, videos, documents. You would have to manually move such directories again taking care you do not delete data by mistake.
