Will Update from 1909 to 20H2 break anything?

I am now on 64 bit 10 pro 1909 18363 1256 and have auto updates turned off. IF I do an update from settings, I am not sure what it will update me to, but if I do it will I then be able to tell it it stop checking for updates by turning auto update off? I thought that at some point MS did not let you hack this setting any more.

OH, I always do A Macrium Reflect full Image first...!

Create a drive image and save on an external drive. Better be safe than sorry.

How did you turned off auto updates?
Detach all other drives from the MB, and disable anti virus.
Best option is to download a Win 10 20h2 iso from MCT, mount the iso and run setup.

Most people on the forum find an update from an old system doesn't work but a clean install works fine

Actually I thought it was a tutorial on this site on how to turn off AutoUpdates but do not remember. As I said, I can just try an update AFTER a Reflect Image so at that point if I have any issues I can just go back. Not sure I need a ISO as I can just revert to what I had, cant I?

Yes, you can try that. If anything goes wrong you can just restore from a backup image.

BUT... you'll have more chance of success with an In-Place upgrade...

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
The ISO must be created in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Well, I CAN try that if the update fails. OH, will that ISO be 20H2 or will it even be Higher?

The ISO will be 21H2. The "reason" that an In-Place upgrade, succeeds more often than not, is because Microsoft keeps messing around with SSU (Servicing Stack Updates). The update to the updater.

They release a new SSU about every month. All those you missed will probably mean that regular Windows Updates will break. But you can "try" it.

OH, it would be interesting if I get 21H2. I wonder how long that will last?

A few more months. They'll start rolling out 22H2 around September or October.
    Aka, sometime this year.

    Currently, we're on 21H2 (19044.1645)

Beginning with Windows 10, version 21H2, feature updates are to be released annually in the second half of the year. Each release is fully supported for 18 months from the release date.
