    Preparing to upgrade boot drive.

I'm about to swap out drives on my Dell 9020. Instead of using back up software, is there some "simple" program that will suggest which files you may want to back up before installing a new drive? Off the top of my head, I'm thinking the bookmarks folder in chrome, my password/login manager in Chrome. I'm getting older and having an issue remembering EVERYTHING that I'd like to reinstall after swapping drives.

I know there's software that would basically duplicate my existing drive and will install that onto new drive seamlessly, but... I've got that google redirect virus on system. And I just can't seem to shake it. Suggestions?

The virus must be eliminated before moving anything.
Two programmes which might suit you are---Avast and Bitdefender free editions.----Make sure they are updated and cover your virus.
    Follow directions to the letter.
When completed, enter your browser Settings >Advanced options>Reset Settings.
A good transfer programme is Macrium Reflect, free or paid.BUT first, read the manual to find out what you can do and how to do it correctly.

As the Dell 9020 is a desktop, this is what I would do.
    - Install the clean drive into a SATA port and detach (power or SATA cable) the infected drive.
    - Do a Clean Install on the drive.
Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

If the computer has UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.

During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name).
Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the SSD till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.
If you don't want to use MS account, don't enable updates or connect to the internet during installation.

    - Once done, shut down and attach the infected drive.
    - Boot from the clean installed drive.
    - Scan the infected drive to clean malware.
    - Open Device manager. If there is any missing drivers (yellow alerts), point to search for the driver on Windows folder of the Dell drive.
    - I also suggest you install and run SUPERAntiSpyware

With the Dell drive cleaned from malware, you can choose to use the Dell drive or the new one with the clean install (my option).

I was just going to give up. Is it really worth trying yet another series of security software on a drive that is basically useless. When this system was new...10 years ago, a 160Gb SSD paired with a 3Tb Sata drive was probably good for a "server" as this was once considered.

However, I might as well do it anyways. Like millions of other folks, we got hit with that ice/sleet/snow storm back on February 2-3. I'm Doordash driver now, so I didn't go out on the 3rd, but was really hustling the money on Friday the 4th. Towards the end of my self scheduled shift, I sprained my left knee while coming out of a restaurant. Doc say's I'll be off 4-6 weeks. Need something to keep me from climbing the walls!!!

That actually leads me into what I'm looking for. The pain meds and muscle relaxers the Doc's prescribed, and this is a medical marijuana state, I'm a bit loopy. Not even sure I need a program to help back up files. I just can't remember all the files I would want to save before yanking the SSD drive out. For example, Chrome bookmarks and log-in file. I don't have much I need to save, as quite a bit is on the cloud (ms one drive is broken for me) Saved game data for steam and non steam games would be another one I'd want to save. IMHO no program in the world is going to help, if I can't remember which files to be saving/backing up in the first place. Does any package have a recommended files to save?

Luckily for me, Dell has made reinstalling the Windows 10 very easy. I just need to get over to our storage unit, as I don't have any usb's on hand.

One final bit of advice. I can't remember all the files I'd like to back up. I've gone through all the usual folders like pictures, downloads, documents and so forth. My only concerns now are my logon information and bookmarks in chrome. I'm planning to sync that with my iPad, but just for peace of mind, I'm not sure how I'd go about backing those two folders up, as I can't find them!

I'm getting ready to move in another month, I'd like to get this taken care of soon. That way I can toss the ps3 I'm salvaing the 1TB from away.

So I thought I was all good to go. Had all my personal stuff backed up onto a usb stick. Got a second stick for Windows 10 install as required by Dell support. Only problem is they wanted to install windows 7! This refurbed system came with windows 10 Pro. Where or who do I get an image from now?

All you need is to let MCT create your boot able USB drive (8G min).

Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

If your computer has UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT but as you said it came with Win 7 it probably has only a Legacy BIOS so you should install as Legacy-MBR.
Detach any other drives from the computer.

During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name) to install as UEFI-GPT or USB (Name) to install as Legacy-MBR.
