Cannot Upgrade My Surface Laptop 2 to Windows 11 - Error 0xc1900101

The title says it all. I have tired upgrading to Windows 11 through Windows Update, the Upgrade Assistant from Microsoft, and the ISO file from Microsoft. All three install methods produce the same error. I've done my research and am pretty techy, but I can't figure this one out.

I have no devices connected to my laptop. I do have a cisco VPN client installed and Duet Display installed, but neither one of them are being used at the time of upgrading. I also have these two pieces of software on another PC that I did to a successful upgrade on. As a test, I removed all non-essential pieces of software from the surface, and I am still getting the same error.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated here!

Hi, the error number is typical of failing to migrate a driver.

Its presence, not whether it's in use or not, is what matters.

In some cases- and one was reported again this morning I seem to recall- this is some arbitrary piece of software.

Detailed analysis of log files is possible, but typically requires some hours of iteration with one of two members who take this on from time to time.

Please feel free to use tenforums as a resource, and research your full error number and look at appropriate threads by @zbook and in particular @Tekkie Boy

setupdiag.exe (free from MS) attempts to analyse your log files.

MS documents where these are and you can find these listed many times in tenforums threads or via a Google search.

However they are not particularly immediately obvious to read and understand.

Presumably you have checked your device is compatible with the upgrade to Win 11.

Note too that upgrading to that is not essential: Win 10 will be support for several years yet.

    Welcome to the Forum.

    Windows upgrade and installation errors

How much free space you have?

    Lets do the basic.
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

Back to Windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    sfc /scannow

If it finds any corrupted files, fixing or not, reboot and run again

Hi, thanks for your reply! I did run SetupDiag.exe and it returned scanned the log and I attached the log file. I have just about removed every piece of non-essential software. My SL2 is compatible with Windows 11 because I have received notifications from Windows update that it can run Windows 11 and has tried to install it via Windows Update but failed with the error code. Lastly, I know it is not essential for me to use Windows 11. I do have it on my main PC and want to also have it on my laptop.

Thanks for your reply as well.

I did everything in your post. chkdsk did not find anything. sfc scannow "did not find any integrity violations".

    Hi, please see just FYI

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...upgrade-errors

    given
Matching Profile found: FindAbruptDownlevelFailure - 55882B1A-DA3E-408A-9076-23B22A0472BD

However as I commented, this is likely to be related to a driver added to your PC.

    What is your PC make/model?
And as Megahertz asked, how much free space do you have on C: ?

You can attempt to determine more from the upgrade logs, e.g.
    setupact.log, setuperr.log

    And you mentioned:
I do have a cisco VPN client installed and Duet Display installed,
You can see all drivers installed using one of these methods:

that includes AnyConnect and Duet Display. Maybe I didn't make that clear. I apologize.

The laptop is a Microsoft Surface Laptop 2. I have 121GB free of 237GB.

I took a look at the two other log files, but I couldn't find anything useful. Maybe you can? Again, thanks for all the help you're putting in!

    C:\Windows\Logs\SetupDiag\setupdiagresults.xml

and compress and upload/provide link to
    C:\Windows\logs\CBS

I guess tenforums has a limitation on uploading XML files. It really only says what the Log file says.

If it means anything, in the same directory as the .log file, there is what looks like the log file for the entire upgrade process. I will attach it to this reply.

Again and again in the last log file you uploaded there is
sto: Unable to unload hive key '{bf1a281b-ad7b-4476-ac95-f47682990ce7}D:/wd/out/winpe_setup/Windows/System32/config/DRIVERS' loaded by another process. Error = 0x00000005, Time = 0 ms

implying something else is running holding it open.

The CBS log file may be informative.

Note that not all file types can be uploaded to tenforums. There is a limitation. Where this applies- as it does to size- either
    - zip the file and upload it
or upload to a file sharing site and post a share link.
