Bad RAM, reinstalled Windows, want to get old windows back, but can't.

    Hi guys,
My old windows OS Build was 19041.1165, but the new one is OS Build 19044.1288 Winver21H2.

A few days ago my computer got stuck in a boot loop. I suspected it was a Windows problem so I reinstalled Windows from a flash drive. When that also crashed after it booted, I did a thorough check and discovered I have a bad RAM port and a bad stick of RAM. Fixed that, and now we are up and running.

My computer is now working, kinda. I would like to reinstall my old OS and system files/settings/etc. from Windows.old. However, when I go to system recovery in settings to do so, I do not have the option to do that. It's only allowing me to restart my computer and do something else.

    Here are my questions:
    1. Can I restore my computer to its previous glory and OS build through Windows.old in any way?
    2. Is it possible to put that information onto a flash drive and then boot from it like I did with the new version of windows?
    3. I'm assuming I cannot access the restore windows because there was no way for me to create a backup with the boot loop. Is there a way to just, undo what I've done and go back to my old Windows through windows.old?

I looked but haven't found any threads with this information in the last few weeks. I have done my best to research this but I'm relatively new to IT and still struggle with some things. I appreciate your help everyone!

Hello scarlet and welcome to TF

Option 2, Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10

Do you see the option to go back to previous version? How many days since you reinstalled?

    How was the reinstallation performed?

    a) custom install
    b) clean install

If it was a custom install then it created a windows.old
It is was a clean install then there was no windows.old created.

If a windows.old was created then important files can be restored from Windows.old.

If you want to create a new windows.old that can be done now.
This saves the current files that are on the computer.

Hi Steve, no that is the only option I have - to restart. There is no go back. I reinstalled yesterday.

Windows.old was created so this was a custom install. I had no choice.

It seems like you won't be able to go back then, but lets see what others say.

Going forward, we recommend making periodic backups Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect to a different drive. I you had such a backup now, you'd be able to go back to the point and time you created it - so a worthwhile thing to start doing now to prepare for any future disasters like you boot drive dying, getting corrupt, a bad update, etc - it happens.

Hi Steve, I was unable to create a backup because I was unable to access my operating system due to a boot loop. The backups I have created in the past were too long ago (about 3 weeks) so I am unable to restore from there.

With Macrium Reflect (MR), you can boot from a MR rescue USB (it's bootable) and make backups or restore even if your boot drive won't boot - very cool and handy in a situation like this. You'd be able to restore your 3 week old MR backup if you had one.

Windows Backup is not deprecated and MS even tells people to use third party backup tools on their website now.

Many boot loops can be interrupted.

If there is a windows.old it can be restored.
If there is a windows.old.000 it can be restored.
If there is a windows.old.001 it can be restored.
    etc.
