    Win10 upgrade error from Win7?

Hi all - I have a Gateway All-In-One that I just did a fresh install of Win7 on, did the phone activation on (successful) and then immediately started a Win10 upgrade on. I was using a Win10 USB stick created through the Media Creation Tool for 21H1 that I have used many times before, so I know it's not the issue.

No additional software or drivers have been installed....just that completely fresh install of Win7.

The Win10 upgrade fails with the following error:

Any thoughts on what could be causing the issue?

Thanks for and help or suggestions! :)

    Hi,
First boot phase: Boot failures in this phase are relatively rare, and almost exclusively caused by device drivers. Disconnect all peripheral devices except for the mouse, keyboard, and display. Obtain and install updated device drivers, then retry the upgrade.

Run setupdiag.exe (free from MS and post the result.

@zbook or @Tekkie Boy may be able to help with deeper diagnosis which will require log file analysis and can be very time consuming.

Another approach would be to clean install Win 10 directly without upgrading from Win 7, using the valid qualifying license for Win 7.
Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

Bear in mind your Gateway is old (how old?) and as such upgrading to Win 10 is entirely at your own risk.

Yup, fully aware it's an older machine that may have issues with Win10, but I've rarely had issues with upgrading to Win10 when upgrading older machines, luckily :)

It is an older machine, a ZX6961 - but it's a Core i5 with 6GB of RAM, so it should run Win10 fine.

Trying something else before I report back. There were several drivers Win7 didn't auto-install, including the graphics driver. I just installed all drivers on it and am going to try the upgrade again. Hopefully the issue was caused by a missing driver (especially the video driver maybe?)

Will let you know - it's trying the upgrade again now!

I've done that in the past, but often when I've tried a clean Win10 install and then inputted the Win7 license key, it would fail to activate. But, I've found the most reliable way for me has been to install Win7, activate that with the license key using the phone/text system, and then upgrading to Win10 once activated. :)

    Hi,
    Disconnect from the internet.
Move the 10 iso to the 7 desktop and mount the iso and run setup.exe as admin.

It wasn't connected to the net when I tried the first time and got the error - the WiFi drivers weren't even installed.

I'll give the other things you suggested a try if this second attempt fails! :)

    @ThrashZone @dalchina

All is well now! Installing all the Win7 drivers before upgrading seemed to do the trick - thanks! :)

    Hi,
Wouldn't think it would matter ms would just switch to ms generic drivers regardless.
