    Can't get UEFI drive to boot - Chapter 2


    In the previous thread of 18 pages I was almost there, but I still am unable to boot into my UEFI NVMe storage device. I'm taking up the cause here. Thank you to all who were so incredibly helpful in Chapter 1.

    UPDATE: Since I marked this thread as solved, and so you the reader don't have to wade through 9 pages...
    The issue was that a Samsung 860 EVO disk was interfering with booting into UEFI mode. For some reason when that disk was connected to the PC, the PC would boot into legacy mode even though I had selected the UEFI disk to boot in BIOS.

    I concluded there must be something on that Samsung 860 disk that was intercepting the boot sequence. The solution was to delete all the 4 partitions on that MBR disk (After backing them up of course), convert the disk to GPT and then one by one restore the deleted partitions and boot UEFI mode to ensure that the disk was no longer intercepting the boot sequence. Some pretty strange behavior was observed while executing that process such as the GPT disk reverted to MBR mode all by itself. But once I finally got all 4 partitions restored, I was able to boot consistently into UEFI mode.

    So now I get the benefits of improved performance in UEFI mode and I'm ready for Windows 11. The odd thing is that I read that CSM must be disabled in order to boot UEFI mode, but I have CSM enabled. But as long as I have all the other settings in BIOS that support UEFI mode, it's working.

    Let's see what you have.
    Boot into windows, insert USB drive and post a Disk Manager Image. Please whole window and expand the columns so we can read them.

    FYI...I have the new UEFI NVMe in the middle M.2 slot on the MB (page 1-19, slot A, or M.2_1). I have the legacy NVMe in the bottom MB M.2 slot (page 1-19, slot B or M.2_2).

    I can see you have two boot able drives:
    - Drive 0 from witch you booted from
    - Drive 2 (F:) that has a active partition.

    Witch one is the M.2 drive that you want to boot as UEFI?

    Turn off the computer and remove the PS power cord from the outlet.
    - Remove M.2 drive 0. Hold the stick by the border.
    - Disconnect the SATA or power cable from drives 1, 3 and 4 leaving on only drive 2.
    PLEASE do it. Better be safe than sorry.

    Reconnect the PS power cord to the outlet.

    Enter BIOS by pressing Del or F2 during POST

    Fast boot = Disabled
    CSM = disabled
    Secure Boot = Disable - if have a disable option

    Insert the USB Win 10 drive on a USB port
    Save and exit (F10)

    During POST, when the Asus logo appears, press F8 to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name).
    Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the SSD till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.
    Remove the USB drive on the first boot after copying the files.
    If you don't want to use MS account, don't enable updates or connect to the internet during installation.

    When you finish it will boot as UEFI.

    Next step will be to replace the new C: partition with the one in drive 0. But that is another chapter.

    Just to know when you're going to need my assistence, when do you expect to do the above instructions?

    I intend to do them tonight after dinner, say around 7pm-ish Eastern Time. If there's some other way I can contact you that you prefer, I can do that. If you're not immediately available that's certainly OK. Starting Saturday morning I'll be away until Sunday night.
