@NavyLCDR - How did you get the partitions populated on the clean disk in post 96?

You said don't mess with Recovery partitions, but how did you get the one in your illustration?
I booted from a Windows 10 USB flash drive and did a normal clean install to a blank disk. On my own computers, I delete recovery partitions.

    I thought the same thing.

I always suggest to run mbr2gpt on a winpe. Under windows many things can prevent the conversion (like antivirus)
Same mbr2gpt run from WinPE (Shift + F10 from Windows Setup):

Navy`s SR carried over from his MBR install.

@thornev, why did you ever give your System Reserved partition the letter Z ?

In doing so, files were written to it and it grew in size.

    @AddRAM -
I needed to do something to the partition in DISKPART and I couldn't without assigning a letter. Are you saying I should remove any and all letters on System partitions?

And what files would have been written to it?

I don`t know what files were written to it, it`s your PC, I can`t tell.
A System Reserved partition should never have a letter, when you do a MBR/Legacy install it does not assign a letter to the SR partition.

What is your purpose in doing this project ?
    To convert a MBR/Legacy install of W10 to a GPT/UEFI install of W10 ?

Probably nothing wrote to it if you didn't . But, yeah, it doesn't need a drive letter unless you're need to do something in there.

Besides having some fun with Windows, I want to see what the performance benefit is about which I read (haven't done enough with it yet to make a judgement) and get ready for Windows 11. I'm not going to be an early installer, but it's a step in that direction. So yeah, I want to migrate my current, daily running environment from legacy to UEFI (though as a last resort I'm willing to install a new Windows 10 and reinstall my most critical apps).

I did a convert, I`ll tell you, you should do a clean GPT/UEFI install of W10, and when it comes to W11, you should be doing a clean GPT/UEFI install too.
Buy another M.2 if you have to.
You`ll never feel a speed difference between GPT vs MBR, that`s not what it`s about.
W11 is great, there`s no reason to wait.

    980...Wow! I have 860 and 970 installed now.

I've done clean reinstalls before. I never regretted them. Windows gets bogged down after a while and the improved performance one gets back with a clean reinstall is enjoyable. It's not a bad idea actually for this project. I just have to ensure that apps with critical data are built so that the external data is portable across app reinstalls. I would have to slap my wrist if I ever agreed to use an app that doesn't make its data portable if that data is critical for me.

I have a 860 Pro 256GB unhooked in the Z170 as my backup. They are excellent SSD`s

I put a 970 Pro on the Z170 with a fresh clean install, it`s fast.
