Running chkdsk with options /R, /B or /forceofflinefix can take a VERY long time. That's the only way that chkdsk can find and fix bad sectors, though.
You should be able to boot pressing F2 and get into the BIOS, then boot to USB or CD-ROM/DVD.
It sounds like the game that your nephew brought you to install may have had malware on it.
Thanks, MotorFinders, and I apologize for the delay. It turned out that the copy protection system just cannot work on modern versions of Windows. But I discovered that the game is AbandonWare, and so I found the workaround files there. The first thing they did was to apply an official update, then I had to replace the protection file with a hacked version. When this was complete, everything worked fine!

Thank you for all your time and assistance!

Thank you for getting back to me here. I get help here when I need it and like to give back when I can. It's great to know that I did help someone with a knotty problem. It's also good to learn about an exceedingly difficult issue with abandonware, and how to deal with it.

    Hi @Thenin

Assuming your Recovery USB was properly created using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool:
    1. Disconnect all peripherals, you can leave the mouse
    2. Press 10 to enter BIOS, exit while applying all defaults
    3. Insert created Recovery USB
    4. Press F9 to enter Boot Menu directly and boot from the pendrive normally (don't do Legacy Mode or anything like that)

Here is the official tutorial from HP Support (recommended to watch in full before attempt):

This is the same video I used to recover my own HP laptop initially. Good luck!

Thank you very much, krollo ! Would you kindly tell me the exact model name and number of the flash drive you used for your Cloud recovery? You see, HP refuses as a matter of policy to provide a list of compatible flash drives for this purpose. If you were to web search for complaints about this very issue you would find that many people --including myself -- tried and tried, but could never find a flash drive that worked. My first thought after trying 5 different 32GB flash drives without success was that a 32GB drive was too small, regardless of what HP says. So I tried 3 different 64GB flash drives, and none of them worked either, even after following your recommendations to the letter.

The failure symptom was always the same, after performing all the steps documented by HP, when it came to the part where it asked me to choose a flash drive, it always reported that it couldn't find any. So I did what you and the other respondents here, not only did I disconnect every device that was not needed for this task (for the non-system HDDs,I disconnected the cables), but I inserted the flash drives directly to those on the motherboard (oh, I forgot to mention that since my nephew's HP laptop would not boot, I was doing all this on my own main desktop computer). When that didn't work either, I tried every other USB port on the machine. No luck.

I signed up for HP's "Friendly" help service and spoke with them about the problem. They suggested all the expected things, like HW & software resets and diagnostics on my desktop, but as expected, they refused to name a single flash drive manufacturer and model. They offered nothin

For whatever reason, the TenForums board software refused to allow me to type anything more at all - even in other fields such as the Reason for Editing (but I could type the reason in my text editor, then copy and paste it there). I've often had problems typing on this site, one issue is it's refusal to permit selecting some text and replace it with new typing. I've always had to backspace to delete the unwanted text and then type what I wanted.

Anyway, back to the issue at hand. The support people offered nothing useful for this problem, so I decided to give it one final try, this time trying an HP brand 64GB flash drive. I figured that surely their own drive would work. But it didn't!

So I had no choice but to perform a fresh install of Windows 10 Home 20H2 (or is it 21H2? It was the latest at the time). That worked fine, of course, but the laptop still doesn't have a recovery partition. So I made two full disk clones on two different media.

Sorry if all that was too verbose, but I always err on the side of too much info rather than too little.

To close, I would be extremely grateful if you could identify the flash drive that allowed you to succeed!

    Thank you!

I am pretty sure you can save the downloaded wim files before they are extracted to usb.

I just plugged in a lexar Jumpdrive 32gb usb3.0 stick and it was happy to download the stuff. Not sure if this particular model is still available it is a few years old. It is this orange one

No idea why you are having a problem. You have tried several, so I doubt it is the flash drives that are the probelm.

I did it a while ago. IIrc the wims are saved to a temp folder, so just pause the gui when it has completed the download and copy them somewhere safe.

I would use processhacker to pause the process. Overview - Process Hacker

    Hi @Thenin,

I used the SanDisk 64GB Ultra Flair USB 3.0 to create my HP Recovery USB:

Next time you may consider Xiaomi 64-GB USB 3.0, which is good value for money.
