For Dell Data Vault read this:

    https://www.dell.com/community/Windows-General/How-do-you-uninstall-the-Data-Vault/m-p/4775646/highlight/true#M370058

Uninstall DiskCryptor from the Control Panel and reboot the system.

When done check in the following path that the driver dcrypt.sys was also removed:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\dcrypt.sys

    Additional information for filter drivers:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...filter-drivers

OMGsh! Case closed! It worked! I have been fighting with this for several years and it finally worked!! Win10 21H1 finally installed.

The last thing I did was delete the Evoluent mouse software, DiskCryptor, Dell Data Vault and nVidia graphics driver. (I never did anything to investigate and/or remove the DiskCryptor filter drivers though, since it slipped my mind). I restarted the machine. I then ran the BAT file HERE to sweep out old update files. I then put it in clean boot mode as discussed HERE and restarted the machine. I isolated the machine by disconnecting all peripherals and web connections. I mounted the Media Creation Tool's ISO and chose Setup.EXE using Run As Admin. For updates, I selected (dot) not right now. The process chugged and finally loaded 21H1. Yay! Thank you folks for your help! I was about to give up completely!

    @mridzon

Thanks for your feedback and great to hear.

Let me also say the following:

Running the script from the MS Community when upgrading via ISO is unnecessary.

The SoftwareDistribution folder that is deleted with the script has no relevance to the upgrade via ISO.

Likewise, the Windows Update logs have no meaning in the history.

You can reinstall the Nvidia drivers.

And if you need Dell Data Vault, you can reinstall that too.

If not, leave it off the computer.

Basically, you should always uninstall software with the so-called filter drivers on the system before a feature update.

It is best to use the manufacturer's removal tool for third-party antivirus programs.

To ensure that these filter drivers are removed.

Bitlocker is able to decrypt the hard drive when upgrading, but it is better if you do it manually beforehand.

That should have been it from me too.

    Take care.

Just for future reference, I am familiar with that script and the TenForumsTutorials equivalent is much more effective - it addresses more issues and can fix WU problems that Sumit Dhiman's [2016] version cannot.
    - I once compared about half a dozen versions of that script available on the internet & the TenForumsTutorials one was better than all the others.
    Reset Windows Update - TenForumsTutorials

My comments should not be taken as any slight on Sumit. He is highly competent & helpful and he might well have gone on to work out improved forms of his original script by now.

    All the best,
    Denis

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

All of this journey was a little out of my expertise. So I imagine you are correct, in that the script was unnecessary. But someone else mentioned it in another forum, so I blindly followed their guidance, having no better knowledge. I suppose "No harm, no foul" running the script.

Yes, I already installed the nVidia driver, so that's good.

This is great feedback and I appreciate it. As mentioned above, I was kind of walking blind, as various forums were giving me feedback with little explanation as to what was good, why it was good, and how it should be implemented.

Final post mortem: I am fairly sure Disk Cryptor was the culprit. I have a very similar machine with many of the same apps, that's been stuck at Build 1803 for several years. Today on that machine, I removed nothing but Malware Bytes and Disk Cryptor. I walked through the same steps as I laid out above. It finally updated to 21H1. Thank you folks!

Yes, I think so, too.Every now and then Nvidia drivers cause problems and since I didn't want to strain your nerves unnecessarily, I had them removed as a precaution.

    Have a great day.

I don't want to run the thread off topic, but I would like to quickly ask if there is a suggested alternative to Disk Cryptor that techie folks recommend to password protect a removable thumb drive.
