Windows 10 Stuck at Build 1909
Hello! I hope I can find an answer here. I apologize for the lengthy post, but I think it might be helpful to give a full summary of what I have tried.
I'm basically at the end of my rope, having tried everything I can find on Google to fix this issue. Basically, my Win10 Pro machine refuses to update to any newer builds (I think the latest is 21H1). The attached SCREENSHOT1 shows the blue screen near the end of its update attempt. Moments later it begins restoring its previous build and when I finally log in, I get the image in the attached SCREENSHOT2. I consistently get these exact errors every single time, no matter what I try.
This is a repeat problem I have had on several Dell Win10 machines since the OS was débuted 3-4yrs ago. The default answer I get from many folks is "wipe it clean and start from scratch." Yes, I have begrudgingly done that a couple times, but as sure as the grass is green, the issue returns at the next major Microsoft build release. I'm really trying to figure out why it continues to happen, so I can avoid reformatting my drive every time.
Here are some specs:
- Dell Precision P7530 laptop
- Windows 10 Pro
- Version 1909
- System Type is x64-based
- System SKU is 0831
- Processor is Intel Core i9-8950HK CPU @ 2.90GHz, 6 cores, 6 logical processors
- 64Gb RAM
- Sound device is Realtek Audio
- Display is NVIDIA Quadro P3200
- Display adaptor RAM is 1,048,576 bytes
Here is a summary of things I've tried:
- I have asked my company's IT experts, to no avail. By the way, my company's IT protocols are pretty loose, so the issue isn't related to overbearing stringent IT restrictions (i.e., I have complete admin control of the machine).
- I have run virus scanners from Malware Bytes and ESET Online Scanner. The machine is clean.
- I have run SFC /SCANNOW, as well as few DISM commands. The attached SCREENSHOT3 shows no issues but the upgrade still failed.
- One-by-one, I chose "update driver" for every single device in my Device Manager. It didn't help.
- In all of my attempts, I am running from the Media Creation Tool, rather than the Windows Update Service. From the MCT, I have downloaded the ISO. I mount it and run Setup.exe using Run As Admin. I will disconnect all the machine peripherals and put it in Airplane Mode so there's no web connectivity. I always get the same failing result though.
- I have turned BitLocker off and made an attempt. It doesn't help.
- The BIOS has been updated from the Dell website last week. It didn't help.
- I tried disabling Fast Startup. It didn't help.
- I found WuReset.bat somewhere on Google. I believe its author (Shawn Brink) is a member here. Nearly every attempt, I have run the bat, as an admin. I then restart the machine and re-attempt the ISO update. It doesn't help.
- I tried Clean Boot Mode. It doesn't help.
- Disabled firewall. It didn't help.
- The only 3rd party antivirus I have is Malware Bytes. I disabled it, but it doesn't help.
- Disabled secure boot in BIOS. It doesn't help.
- In all of this, my Windows Update Service got messed up somehow. The attached SCREENSHOT4 shows "error encountered." Previously, it was functioning and would download weekly security updates. Now it does nothing. To attempt fixing it, I have tried the following, although none of them fixed it.
- Reboot in Safe Mode and attempt to run Windows Update.
- Clean boot.
- Change DNS address manually to 8.8.8.8 (primary) and 8.8.4.4 (alternate).
- Run Update Troubleshooter.
- Stop and restart Windows Update service in Admin Tools.
- Turn off auto detection for proxy server
- Run Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat. I believe Shawn Brink wrote this.
I extracted the Windows Update Log and have attached a TXT from one of my update attempts. It contains many GetServiceObject errors. I see this same set of errors in the log every time. It is cryptic to me, so I'm not sure if it pinpoints the root cause.
I'm at the end of my rope and don't know what else could be wrong. Like I said, I had a very similar problem on another Dell laptop a few years ago. Nothing I ever tried would work, until I finally wiped the machine clear, and reinstalled the OS from scratch. But oddly, the problem always returns when the next big build was released. I'd really like to avoid wiping the drive clean on this new Dell. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
