Upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 error 0x800702A9

    Hi all,

I've been trying and failing to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 5520 laptop from Windows 8.1 (version 6.3.9600) to Windows 10 using the Microsoft upgrade page found here. After hours of downloading, it always fails after around 75% of the install (before it ever re-starts) and then reverts page to with the error "Windows 10 Installation has failed <OK>".

I've followed all the troubleshooting guidance (check the spec, disconnected all the peripherals, made sure the machine has all the latest Dell and Microsoft Windows updates etc.) but still encounter the same issue each time. I've never done anything exotic with the PC and have hardly downloaded any new apps to it.

Examining the BlueBox log file, it seems to always crash out with the error 0x800702A9 but I don't know how to fix it. I'm not technically gifted to figure it out myself and a web search hasn't been helpful.

    Can someone please help me?

For what it's worth, I have put the log file below (it repeats the same error multiple times, but have truncated it to the just the first run to save space).

Have you uninstalled any 3rd party security software?
Do you have more than 30Gb free on C: ?
Have you checked disk and file system?
Have you made sure your BIOS/UEFI is the latest available?
Were you offered the upgrade via Windows Update?

Please download setupdiag.exe (free from MS), run that and post the (short) outcome.
This attempts to analyse upgrade logs.

A more straightforward approach which makes repeat attempts easier and quicker is to download a Win 10 iso file using the MS media creation tool as per the relevant tenforums tutorial.

Then use that to attempt the upgrade, but choose not to accept updates as part of it.

    Thanks for the reply!

I followed all the troubleshooting steps including installing all the latest Dell and Windows 8.1 updates. I looked at the BIOS and it's the latest available from Dell for my machine.

I have >800GB fee on C drive. No third party AV (only Windows Defender, which I switched off to see if it made a difference).

    I am downloading Win 10 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Here is the result of the Setup Diag (I didn't know what part to share so have shared wholly):

It may be that DISM itself is damaged on your PC
Failed to get the provider DISM Package Manager from the remote provider store.
    Try running
    SFC /SCANNOW
    from an admin command prompt.

    This seems relevant

    - suggests you're using the MS update assistant- is that correct?

    Also note this:
    Windows10.0-KB5005645-x64.cab
As I suggested, get an iso file, then attempt upgrade without opting to include updates. (You can disconnect the internet if you wish).
Rt click iso file, click Mount
    Open new drive letter created
    Double click setup.exe

    Thanks again!

I will follow the instructions here Download Windows 10 ISO File this evening

I assume I don't need to burn the ISO to a DVD? Will I still be able to retain existing files/apps (i.e. not a clean install)?

As far as I am aware, I do use Windows Update.

I ran SCANNOW and it said it couldn't repair all of the corrupt files (I don't know if this residual corrupt file is the cause of my Win 10 install woes as I haven't re-run the install yet). The CBS Log has the following:

I assume I don't need to burn the ISO to a DVD?
    No.

Will I still be able to retain existing files/apps (i.e. not a clean install)?
    a. If you created a bootable medium (e.g. a DVD or flash drive) then booted your PC from that, you would be on yur way to a clean install.

I didn't ask you to do that, so no.

    b. An upgrade or in-place upgrade starts by logging in normally.
That's what I've asked you to do.

    You can upgrade by:
    - using Windows Update
    or
    - downloading the upgrade source, logging in, then using it.

As far as I am aware, I do use Windows Update.
Not sure to what that is a response.

    Let's try the question again.

When running Windows, have you been offered the upgrade to Windows 10, or not?
i.e. since the PC is running Win 8, have you previously chosen not to upgrade when offered it?

You can try running SFCFix - but first, just in case - ideally you've done this already- create a full disk image of your O/S as is endlessly advised here, e.g. using Macrium Reflect (free) or Aomei Backupper to a large enough external disk.

    Once done, see
Fix: Corrupt Files Reported by SFC Using SFCFix - Appuals.com

    Thank you dalchina!

I am writing this message to you on my newly upgraded Windows 10 PC!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I don't know if it was your the ScanNow, disconnecting the internet/updates or the ISO upgrade method I tried but it somehow fixed the problem.

I would never have been able to work it out by myself. If there is anything I can do to show my appreciation to you or this site then do let me know. The Microsoft.com guys were just telling me to give up and do a clean install, which I would have done if I hadn't visited this site and received your magnificent advice.

Thanks again for what you do!

glad it wasn't too tricky (this time!).

Now before anything goes wrong, start a new sequence of disk imaging so if anything goes badly wrong or your disk fails you can recover fairly painlessly. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external disk for image files.
