Does anything trigger Windows 11 to install automatically?

My computer is ready for Windows 11, but I’m not. Is there anything I should avoid or do to make sure it does not install before I’m ready? For example, will pausing Windows Updates cause it to install when I un-pause it? Will pressing check for updates cause it to install? Is there anything else that could trigger it?

    Hi,

    If you have Windows Pro:
How to Block Windows 11 with Group Policy Editor:
    Open the Start Menu.
Type gpedit.msc and load the Group Policy Editor.
Go to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business.
Double-click on “Select the target feature update version”.
    Set the policy to Enabled.
    Type 21H1 into the field.
    Close the Group Policy Editor.

    If you have Windows Home:
How to Block Windows 11 with Registry Editor:
    Open the Start Menu.
Type regedit.exe and Run the Registry Editor.
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.
Set the Dword TargetReleaseVersion to 1. If the value does not exist, right-click on Windows Update, and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.
Set the value of TargetReleaseVersionInfo to 21H1. If the value does not exist, right-click on Windows Update, and select New > String Value.
    Restart the PC.

This will prevent windows from upgrading to another major version Without disabling any other updates.
Once Windows 10 21H2 appears on Microsoft’s website, you can switch over to it instead.

No, it should appear in Windows Update as an optional upgrade and won't install until you click its 'Download and install' button. If/when it appears for you click 'Stay on Windows 10 for now' to make it go away.

About the only way it would be installed automatically would be if you joined the Insiders Preview channel, so don't sign up as an Insider

Thanks Bree. What happens if you press Stay on Windows 10 for Now? Can you trigger the Windows Update when you are ready? At some point I will want to upgrade. I’m just not sure when.

Not sure, I haven't had my upgrade offer yet. Early reports are that it disappears completely, but may reappear some time, maybe days later.

Once you've been offered it you can be fairly sure MS think your PC should be ready to upgrade without problems. If it doesn't reappear in Windows Update you can always start the upgrade yourself, MS offer three ways to do it.

    Download Windows 11
There are 3 options below for installing or creating Windows 11 media. Check out each one to determine the best option for you.

If you press stay on windows 10, it stops nagging you to update but you get a new link on right that says something like "check if windows 11 is ready". Do not click that link UNTIL you want to upgrade. It is practically malware behaviour as it does not just check, it creates a screen to start upgrade. You cancel it and it comes back next reboot.

So pressing "stay on Windows 10" link is benign but do not press other link unless ready to upgrade.

Thanks Cereberus. I suspected there would be some tricky behavior here. When that second link is clicked, do you think the result is recorded on your computer or in your Microsoft Account? I’m asking because it would be good to know if a Macrium Reflect system image could undo it. Obviously, a system image restore can’t undo anything recorded in the cloud.

I have tried it. An image backup before you click link reverts back to that status if yiu accidentally click link.

    Hello @radiowaves,

Have a look at this => How to Specify Target Feature Update Version in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.
