Does anything trigger Windows 11 to install automatically?

I went onto the insider program dev channel specifically hoping to get W11 and it was offered almost immediately, but mine didn't carry out the update until I gave my permission.

About the only way it would be installed automatically would be if you joined the Insiders Preview channel, so don't sign up as an Insider
Bree is correct. In Windows Updates my computer showed "ready to upgrade to W11". I made a backup of Windows 10 first then allowed the upgrade to happen. Everything went smoothly.

However, I lost my Quick Launch Area and didn't like the Start menu either in the center or left. I just didn't like the new Start Menu. Plus, the task bar context menu and desktop context menu are nowhere near as productive as W10's.

I searched forums and general searches on the web and found two things that made W11 much better.
    1. Explorer Patcher from github.com 2. Start 11 from stardock.com

After using W11 for a week I finally decided it just wasn't (as nice) as W10. I used the Rollback feature in W11 to return to Windows 10. That worked fine.

I still used my System Image Backup to recover W10. (just in case anything was funky)

Conclusion IMHO: If you enjoy plodding through a new OS and finding fixes, patches and reg-hacks then W11 will be an adventure for you. If you are not savvy with computer technology/Windows 10 or 11 hacks (the good kind) then I would advise sticking with Windows 10 for as long as you can. Perhaps Windows 11 Dev-team is listening to all of use around the world who are Power to Advanced Windows Users who use the Feedback Hub, but until another major upgrade changes the QLA, Taskbar, Context Menus and Start Menu I too will stick with Windows 10.

I am currently dual booting so I can watch the progress of Windows Updates on Windows 11 from time to time. Only used 50 GB of my C: Drive for the W11 partition. I don't plan on installing any major programs on that OS until I am happy with the bare bones of it.

I was told by a known to me Microsoft person that the Windows 11 Pro version will require a.k.a. force you to set up a Microsoft account and you must have an Internet connection otherwise the operating system will not work.

Here is what was revealed and said.

The sole reason that they cooked up Windows 11 is because Windows 10 (Remember? "It's a service and is the last version") was the proving ground to establish a stable and reliable connection a.k.a. "updates" and monitor your activities.
Microsoft store is a part of that as well, thus prepping the pathway to total Microsoft & Internet connection dependency and control. Just like a drug dealer gives you the finest heroin and cocaine until you're totally addicted and then you have to pay for it. Same principle, different business.

It is the precursor to manipulating and pushing to an online only version which you have to pay/rent monthly or whatever else a scheme otherwise no go. A Russian style "slice by slice" approach you will get eventually "Putinized".* by Microsoft.

Enjoy your last days of real freedom as it's vanishing rapidly in all areas.

    Mark my words!
In as little as 5 years, as it is already happening, you will have to pay for every little dip s... on a subscription basis as already present and more and more emerging, software releases that cannot be installed but only subscribed to and work as long as you have an Internet connection. (Google: "differences of Windows 10 Chinese version")
One day soon you will also be only able to run your toaster, refrigerator, dishwasher and whatever else on a subscription basis. Just watch!
Didn't pay your car lease on time? Right! Manufacturer will disable your car if your payment is 1 day late respectively "behind the required schedule".
Marketing calls it "smart appliances" as they hyped you up with this seller phrase. Too much and many to mention here.
And people, just like they flocked to and enthusiastically sold their soul to the devil in exchange for getting a smart phone, will continue to sell whatever is left of their soul. In principal just like a drug addict.

You're welcome to laugh at my post, criticize and ridicule it in every which way you want.
Let me know how you doing in 5, at most 10 years from now.

"Google/Alexa! Open the door". "I'm sorry Dave I'm afraid I cannot do that right now." Becoming a reality.

That's not entirely accurate. What has changed, currently only for the Insider Dev builds of Windows 11, is that for a clean install of W11 Pro you now cannot complete the initial OOBE setup without an internet connection and a Microsoft account. That has been the case for W11 Home, either as a clean install or setting up a new PC supplied with W11 Home, since Windows 11 was first released. It seems likely to be extended to W11 Pro in future retail builds.

However, if you do an in-place upgrade to W11 from an install of W10 (Home or Pro) that only has local accounts, then you will only have local accounts in Windows 11.

There are known workarounds to bypass the requirement for an internet connection and to install W11 with only a local account. Windows 11 works fine without a Microsoft account, albeit you won't be able to use some features such as OneDrive.

Just like those "anonymous sources with information...." talked about in the news media. False information, at the moment.

My computer is ready for Windows 11, but I’m not. Is there anything I should avoid or do to make sure it does not install before I’m ready? For example, will pausing Windows Updates cause it to install when I un-pause it? Will pressing check for updates cause it to install? Is there anything else that could trigger it?
I would think that disabling TPM in your BIOS would stop any automatic Windows 11 upgrade.

The OS will always work without internet of course, once past oobe stage.

    Hi folks
Downloaded the latest iso from UUPDUMP and did a "Clean" install as a VM where I'd disabled the NIC's (so no Internet / Lan initially).

Seemed to install OK without Ms account -- build 22567.1 (ni_release) W11 PRO ENG GB version.

I installed via DISM /ApplyImage from a WINPE iso rather than using SETUP.EXE from the downloaded iso.
(I simply used the WINPE iso as the boot media, with the Win install iso as another "virtual CD". Then ran the dism command from the booted WINPE system).

    Cheers

I am savvy with computer technology. Built all my desktops from parts since 1989. All my Lenovo laptops have been "CTO," which means I configure a stripped down version and then add storage and RAM at a fraction of Lenovo's price.

That said, I have much better things to do with my time than do a self-inflicted wound. I will always update Win 10, but stay-the-heck away from Win 11.

    Your problem not mine!
I was asked not to mention the name and I respect and honor that.
Enjoy your future pay per use OS and don't be upset you didn't know.
