Problems installing Win10 on a Samsung RV511 laptop

    Hi,

Because my Dad has started using his old Samsung again, I've been trying to upgrade it from Win7 to Win10.
I started by removing the Broadcom wifi chip, as that has long been known to be incompatible.
I then tried to upgrade using the ISO, and it kept failing with an error code, for which all search results were very vague.

So, I tried a clean install and it became clear that the install failed because the HDD was MBR and Win10 wanted it to be GPT. So, I converted the HDD to GPT and Windows 10 installed.

Then it turned out that the installed version was 1511 (despite the ISO being from June 2020), so it wasn't updating.

I downloaded the latest media creation tool from MS and downloaded the latest ISO.

    I'm now having different problems:

1: It won't boot from USB unless in legacy only mode (not really a showstopper but I'd like to know why)

2: After changing back to legacy only mode and converting the HDD back to MBR, Windows 10 installs, but after the reboot it says that "windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware".

Several websites suggest addressing point 2 by pressing Shift + F10 and then running msoob.exe to force the install to continue. However, I have tried numerous times but Shift + F10 doesn't bring up the command prompt and the laptop shuts down within less than 2 seconds anyway.

I've spent many evenings on this now and I'm running out of time and patience.

My only other idea is to download an older ISO, maybe version 1909, or 2004, and see if that works. Is that a good idea?

Given that the laptop did run 1511 should this laptop be able to run the latest Win10 version?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you create the bootable USB flash drive using Windows 10 media creation tool?

Absolutely no guarantees whatsoever given that the laptop is from 2011.

As you know, many older PCs run win 10 even though they were never designed for it.
Each major upgrade means you get drivers derived from a different set, which may or may not be the same as in previous builds.

I've seen this laptop mentioned recently- particularly the Broadcom issue. In that thread I cited a couple of instances I'd found where BSODs were reported and it had not been possible to run Win 10 on it.

Recommendation: if you have a build that works, stick to it. Disable Windows update once it's as fully updated on that build as you can. Consider security issues- is Defender still updated- or do you need 3rd party AV?

Then it turned out that the installed version was 1511 (despite the ISO being from June 2020)
You can download any build of Win 10 at any date. Depends how the iso was obtained.

A given iso file is a particular build and no other. If you wish, you can check:

Yes, I did. I also tried making it using Rufus.
