Which W10 for a fresh installation?

I am planning a fresh installation of W10 on a spare laptop.
I have been offered W10 Pro (FQC-08789) and W10 Home (FQC-00017) but I have read that these are older versions.

Will these work or should I buy something more recent and, if so, what in particular?

Last question, am I better getting the Pro version instead of Home?

    Thanks.

Hi, note that if your PC already has a valid Win 10 activation associated with it, you can freely clean install Win 10 as many times as you like - no new license needed.

You can freely create a bootable drive to install Win 10:
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10
This will be the latest major build, and capable of installing multiple editions of Win 10, including Home and Pro.

Should you wish, or need, for some technical reason, to install some other build of Win 10, all are freely available.

Your license determines which edition (Home/Pro etc) is deployed.

Home or Pro? Please look at the differences:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/wind...10-home-vs-pro

Which particular features of Pro do you need?

The ones I use are related to control of Windows Update.

    I have been offered W10 Pro (FQC-08789) and W10 Home (FQC-00017)
    - I don't recognise these codes.

It is or has been possible to get Pro for £40-50 - offer has been posted on tenforums (or perhaps less using a valid old Win 7 or 8 license code).

    dalcina,

    Thanks for your reply.

The laptop does not have a valid W10 activation associated with it. I am starting from scratch.

    I found this link:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/ans...ification.html

This link suggests that FQC-08789 has reached End-Of-Life.

What matters is the build number. E.g. 21H2 (current) is also known as 19044. xxxx

Your link shows those codes are some MS Product code.

I have told you how to get a current Windows build-
You can freely create a bootable drive to install Win 10:
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10
as you don't have a previously associated activation, you then need a valid Windows key.

You can clean install and activate Win 10 with a valid upgradable retail Win 7 key, for example (tutorial available). Some have got these very cheaply - others have been scammed. Buyer beware- if it's too cheap, it's probably too good.

How does any particular member of this forum know that @Gaius wants Pro? Maybe they don't want to pay the extra money to get features of Pro that they won't ever need, want or use. @dalchina asked the valid question which was never answered:

And nobody mentioned that he can do a free upgrade if his laptop has Win 7 or Win 8.

The only possible reason for buying FQC-08789 would be that you get a product key. The key is valid for installing the latest version of W10 (and will be valid for W11). The key does not have an 'end of life'. But as you say that your PC already has a digital licence for W10 you do not need another key.
