Paul, many many members tell/told people to uninstall their Anti-Virus, and the Upgrade is telling him to get rid of it.
Avast is garbage and you don`t need it. IMO
I managed to get Macrium installed.
Good. There are plenty of Youtube videos and it has a huge help file both on line and from its GUI.
I'm not quite sure what to do with the information Macrium provided.

Okay, I've gone back to the first page of the thread where it was suggested that I download Macrium. From what I can see, the recommendation from Dalchina is that I acquire a 1tb storage device and make a download copy of everything on the computer before I proceed with the W10 conversion. I'll be able to buy a 1tb storage unit on Monday when next month's pension arrives, so, unless I hear something different from someone here on the forum, I'll be moving ahead at the beginning of the week.
You use Macrium to create a disk image of your existing partitions; that creates a file on your external disk.
It's not just a pretty information tool.
That file can then be used (using Macrium) to either
a. restore partitions from the image file
b. recover any file by mounting the image file - which can then be accessed using file explorer and you will see all the files in the usual way- i.e. a full backup.

Click Backup, Click 'Backup Windows', check all the partitions you wish to image are ticked,

Thanks, dalchina. That gets me closer to understanding what Macrium is. I always realized that information to be stored was in a download, but this sounds like a graphic picture of the storage end of the equation. I realize that I'm going to need this in my W10 installation, but I also feel reassured, knowing that if worst came to worst, I could likely get back to where I am now.
I've got a 1tb USB coming from Amazon, ordered today and delivery promised by Tuesday. So I anticipate getting started Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. A friend is printing the tutorial for me. Unfortunately, I don't have another computer nearby that I can use to reference it online while mine is down and in the conversion process. I'll be studying the procedure between now and whenever I start, so I hope I'll have a grasp on it, but it'll be good to have instructions to refer to. I'm a bit concerned that if I can't get things going, I'll have no way to ask for help or advice.....I'll just have to hope it goes smoothly.
Once again, I'd like to say how grateful I am to have someone with some expertise looking over my shoulder. The help is appreciated.

You're right, AddRAM. Sorry if I haven't followed protocol. I do appreciate everyone that's participated in this thread. The Thank icon is fairly small and I'm sight handicapped, but now that I know it's there, I'll use it.
I don't think you did the right choice. A USB drive is very slow.
You should have bought a SATA SSD like BX500
A SSD is almost 6 times faster than a HDD. It boots in seconds rather than in minutes and open programs at a blink of an eye.
Install the SSD on the computer and with Macrium Reflect, clone the current HDD into the SSD.
When done, detach the HDD and do the downgrade to Win 10 on the SSD.
If successful, clean the HDD (delete all partitions) and use it as a backup drive.
Speaking of the backup drive, if it's USB3, and the PC has USB3 ports, that's plenty fast enough for around 60GB of data to be imaged.
However, this is an old PC, presumably only USB2, so imaging will be a lot slower.
