A postscript to this thread.....I've had huge problems with my computer for a couple of months that no one's been able to solve. However, this is turning into a happy ending.....

I previously was using free security programs over the last few months....AVG, Avira, and Avast. However, , Allan (Managed) on the Tech Guys forum supplied a link to download Microsoft Security Essentials, and I immediately switched to MSE. In the last couple of weeks, all of my problems are disappearing and my computer's healthier than it's been in a long time. I no longer get the frequent "You're not connected to a network" screen messages, and the problems with videos not loading, stalling, and reverting to buffering part-way through videos, has become dramatically better. I haven't done anything else that would account for the improvements, and I have to assume that switching to MSE is what's fixed my computer.

If things keep going the way they are, I'm going to stay with the computer I have on Windows 7, forget about switching to Windows 10, and won't be looking at replacing the tower I have.

I want to thank all the people profusely for the time and effort they put into trying to solve my problem. You guys are great. I'm going to mark this problem Solved.

For others who may need it, MSE is still available from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Yes, MSE seems the lightest weight AV for Windows 7. It uses the same scan engine and virus signatures as Windows 10's Defender does, and Microsoft will continue to provide definitions updates for MSE until January 2023. Also, should you change your mind, it will not conflict with an upgrade to W10 as some 3rd-party AVs are known to do.

Yes, we will continue to provide signature updates for Microsoft Security Essentials until 2023.
