You could also try WoeUSB (GitHub - WoeUSB/WoeUSB: A Microsoft Windows(R) USB installation media preparer for GNU+Linux), which runs under linux. When I tested it one time in the past year, it hang for maybe half an hour, but in the end did produce a working boot stick.

Thanks @siepo, that's interesting, considering such helpers are rare in the Linux world. However, the idea behind my question was to make a bootable Windows installer USB stick without resorting to any helper. I mentioned only Rufus because it's probably the most well known, and I didn't have enough room in the subject field !

I just thought that you might find this interesting and informative.

I have used Ventoy for a while now, and in my opinion it is worth its weight in Gold.

I have my Win 10 ISO, and ALL my Drivers [ if needed ] and Customisation Files on the USB. I also have a few other Bootable Utilities and my System Images on it.

     Ventoy

    About Ventoy:

Ventoy is an open source tool to create a bootable USB drive for ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files.

With Ventoy, you don't need to format the disk over and over, you just need to copy the ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files to the USB drive and boot them directly. You can copy many files at a time and Ventoy will give you a boot menu to select them.

Most types of OS are supported [ Windows/WinPE/Linux/Unix/VMware/Xen... ], including, x86 Legacy BIOS, IA32 UEFI, x86_64 UEFI, ARM64 UEFI and MIPS64EL UEFI.

Basically, depending on the size of the USB, you can have ALL your Bootable ISO's on the USB. Additionally, you can also have Portable Apps, Tools, Utilities, Folders, and Files, ALL on the Non-Bootable Partition of the USB.

I have created a USB using Ventoy and find it an invaluable resource. It is probably the best thing that has ever happened to Bootable Media!

    I hope this helps.

    Interesting !

The Syslinux folks did a similar tool that's called Memdisk and works with some bootloaders including Grub, however it's less advanced since it only hooks an interrupt, which only lasts as long as protected mode doesn't kick in. So it's generally good for BIOS update media, but it won't work with more advanced ones such as a Windows installer.

That being said, additional software was developed to have the thing still work in protected mode, but I think it needs some changes on the boot media itself... I don't know how Ventoy works in that respect.

This is just to confirm that my problem is solved. The problem I was encountering with the computer restarting or freezing was not related to a bad Windows installer USB stick, but rather a BIOS problem.

Flashing a newer version solved it, and now my Win10 installer bootable USB sticks indeed work, as expected.

I usually refrain from flashing the BIOS because it generally creates more problems than anything else. The HP assistant wasn't suggesting a BIOS update either... but it turns out it was the way to go.

Thanks everyone for your advices !

    This is just not true.
