Thanks. I am (as is par for the course) getting conflicting advice on different forums. I am wondering about the wisdom of overclocking the CPU at all. Would it not reach its max turbo speed anyway, when needed, and when not needed, as you say, why run it at full whack, sasving electricity (and bit by bit, the planet!).
It may not be worth the trouble to OC an I9-11900F.

It also has a low-ish TDP of 65W, which will place less demand on a low-profile heatsink/fan like the NH-L12.

Hello again. Thanks - I think you missed a post or two though - weighing up an awful lot of advice and looking at comparative performance statistics, I am going with the i9-11900KF, but will probably not overclock it. I think that is a sane compromise between the i9-11900K and the i9-11900F

I read the post, but it didn't register with me that you'd decided to go with the KF over the F. I thought that you were just considering it. It wants more power than the F (95W TDP vs. 65), but it's still not monstrous.

If you ever decide to overclock it, playing with the multiplier will be easy. It may not be worthwhile, unless you become a twitch gamer.

A "loan" of an RTX 2070 Super? That's quite generous. (Worth at least $400US, based on eBay sales.) Does the X-Plane software use raytracing?

No, I think in XP that would kill frame rates...

I believe that raytracing would have to be coded in. If my quick glance over the thread in your link is correct, it's not.

55FPS at 4k with an I7-10700K and an RTX 2070 Super: impressive. Are you going to invest in a 4k display? (If you weren't in the UK, I'd try to sell you one.)

4K? Having discovered X-Plane in VR (only last month) I doubt I'll ever use my monitor for it again!

Makes me at least hopeful that my intended setup, with the same RTX 2070 Super and an i9-11900KF might do as well, if not better.

OK, this is the spec that I have agreed to. Could go on tweaking it forever: got to call a halt and go for it at some stage!

    Case: GameMax Midi Silent
M/B: ASUS Intel Z590 TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS or MSI MPG Z590 GAMING PLUS (probably the Asus)
    CPU: i9-11900KF
    Cooler: Corsair H100i
    GPU: RTX 2070 Super
    RAM: 2 x 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz
PSU: Corsair 650W (from current PC)
Drives: 3 x SSDs (from current PC)
Other: added 7 port USB3/USB-C card

You decided to upgrade to an RTX 2070? Worthwhile if you can use raytracing. Otherwise, not so much.

I have been using a Corsair H100i in my desktop systems for a while. I like them. No leaks, so far. I used large air coolers for years, but I now prefer having the space around the CPU.

Yes, on 'permanent loan' as you commented on the other day. I don't think its advantage in X-Plane will be anything to do with raytracing (you saw that XP doesn't support it).
