If I were to disable Cortana, would I retain the ability to launch urls from Classic Start menu and locate programs & files on my PC using the taskbar search?
Do you mean the Classic Shell replacement Start menu? I use an amended XML section in the Windows 10 Decrapifier script to give me a clean right-hand pane in the default Start menu so I can't answer about any third-party Start menu replacements.

However, I've never had any problems locating programs and/or files using the taskbar search. In fact, the magnifying glass icon for Windows Search is the only taskbar icon that remains from the original install. I get rid of the rest as I have no use for them, especially Store and Edge.

OOPs, must be time to turn off the PC & make dinner.

    Yes, Classic Shell start menu.

I recall that Windows search was part of Cortana once upon a time and somewhere, sometime, their associated was severed.

Maybe I don't require Cortana any more. I'll try disabling it to see if it causes me any grief.

    Off to make dinner now.
    Cheers

I've never used Cortana. I don't have any use for a voice assistant on my PCs/laptops that has to transfer my speech to the cloud for processing when I can just as soon type a query. (Although I admit I do occasionally use Siri for hands-free phone use.)
